Job description

Job Summary:

Detroit Salt Company is seeking a Diesel Mechanic responsible for maintaining, repairing, and troubleshooting heavy mining equipment, such as haul trucks, loaders, drills, and conveyors. The role ensures fleet and machinery operate at peak performance, supporting safe salt extraction. Ideal for those who enjoy hands-on work, problem-solving, and industrial environments.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  1. Analyze malfunctions, repair, rebuild, and maintain power equipment including cranes, loaders, haul trucks, conveyors, bulldozers, transport vehicles, pumps, compressors, and pneumatic tools.
  2. Operate and inspect machinery to diagnose defects, dismantle and reassemble equipment, and examine parts for damage or wear.
  3. Weld broken parts and structural components.
  4. Check and fill fluid levels, service lubrication points, and perform routine preventive maintenance.
  5. Maintain a clean and safe work area through daily housekeeping.
  6. Complete and submit work logs accurately at each shift's end.
  7. Follow all safety policies, procedures, and regulations, remaining alert to hazards and changing conditions on site.
  8. Cross-train and multi-task across varied skill sets.
  9. Perform incidental tasks as required to complete larger tasks.
  10. Communicate effectively with supervisors and management regarding safety, production, or quality issues.
  11. Troubleshoot and repair electrical and hydraulic systems promptly and skillfully.
  12. Utilize technical drawings and testing equipment for repairs.
  13. Obtain, install, and repair replacement parts as needed.
  14. Perform other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • 1-year CAT SIS Program experience preferred.
  • 2-4 years of experience in an industrial shop or mining environment required.
  • 2-4 years of heavy equipment mechanic experience required.
  • Dependability and reliability are essential.
  • Familiarity with equipment such as cranes, loaders, haul trucks, conveyors, bulldozers, transport vehicles, pumps, compressors, and pneumatic tools.
  • Ability to operate testing and troubleshooting vehicles and equipment.
  • Capable of repairing equipment to OEM standards.
  • Strong diagnostic skills to identify and correct system malfunctions.
  • Experience in dismantling and reassembling equipment.
  • Knowledge of operating lifting devices, hand, and pneumatic tools.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and general computer skills.
  • Demonstrated problem-solving skills.
  • English language proficiency in speaking, reading, and comprehension.

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to work safely in varying temperatures, indoors and outdoors.
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 50+ pounds regularly.
  • Must wear all PPE as required.
