Job Summary:

Detroit Salt Company is seeking a Diesel Mechanic responsible for maintaining, repairing, and troubleshooting heavy mining equipment, such as haul trucks, loaders, drills, and conveyors. Your expertise will ensure that our fleet and machinery operate at peak performance, supporting safe and efficient salt extraction. This role is ideal for someone who enjoys hands-on work, problem-solving, and thrives in an industrial environment.

Duties And Responsibilities

• Analyze malfunctions and perform repairs, rebuilds, and maintenance on power equipment including cranes, loaders, haul trucks, conveyors, bulldozers, personnel transport vehicles, pumps, compressors, and pneumatic tools.
• Operate and inspect machines to diagnose defects, dismantle and reassemble equipment, and examine parts for damage or wear.
• Weld broken parts and structural components.
• Check and fill fluid levels, service lubrication points, and perform routine preventative maintenance.
• Maintain a clean and safe work area through daily housekeeping.
• Complete accurate paperwork and submit work logs at the end of each shift.
• Follow all safety policies, procedures, and regulations, and stay alert to hazards and changing conditions on mine property.
• Cross-train and multi-task with varied skill sets.
• Perform incidental tasks as required to complete larger tasks.
• Communicate effectively with supervisors and management regarding safety, production, and quality issues.
• Troubleshoot and repair electrical and hydraulic systems promptly and skillfully.
• Utilize technical drawings and testing equipment.
• Obtain and install replacement parts, and make necessary repairs.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities

• High school diploma or GED required.
• 1-year CAT SIS Program experience preferred.
• 2-4 years of experience in an industrial shop or mining environment required.
• 2-4 years of heavy equipment mechanic experience required.
• Dependable and reliable.
• Familiarity with equipment such as cranes, loaders, haul trucks, conveyors, bulldozers, and related systems.
• Ability to operate testing vehicles and troubleshoot before and after maintenance.
• Capable of repairing equipment to OEM standards and diagnosing system malfunctions.
• Knowledge of operating lifting devices, hand and pneumatic tools, and repairing engines and transmissions.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office and general computer skills.
• Strong problem-solving skills.
• Proficient in English communication, reading, and comprehension.

Physical Requirements

• Work safely in varying temperatures in production/warehouse and outdoor environments.
• Lift and carry up to 50+ pounds regularly.
• Wear all PPE as required.
