Job Summary:
Detroit Salt Company is seeking a Diesel Mechanic responsible for maintaining, repairing, and troubleshooting heavy mining equipment such as haul trucks, loaders, drills, and conveyors. The role ensures optimal performance of our fleet and machinery, supporting safe and efficient salt extraction. Duties and Responsibilities:
- Analyze malfunctions, repair, rebuild, and maintain power equipment including cranes, wheel loaders, haul trucks, conveyors, bulldozers, personnel transport vehicles, pumps, compressors, and pneumatic tools.
- Operate and inspect machines to diagnose defects, dismantle and reassemble equipment, and examine parts for damage or wear.
- Weld broken parts and structural members.
- Check and fill fluid levels, service lube points, and perform routine preventive maintenance.
- Maintain a clean and safe work area through daily housekeeping.
- Complete and submit work logs and related paperwork accurately at the end of each shift.
- Follow all safety policies, procedures, and regulations, remaining alert to hazards and changing conditions on mine property.
- Cross-train and multi-task across varied skill sets and functions.
- Perform incidental tasks as needed to complete larger tasks.
- Communicate effectively with supervisors and management regarding safety, production, and quality issues.
- Troubleshoot and repair electrical and hydraulic systems promptly and skillfully.
- Utilize technical drawings and testing equipment for repairs.
- Obtain, install, and make repairs using replacement parts.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- High school diploma or GED required.
- 1-year CAT SIS Program experience preferred.
- 2-4 years of experience in an industrial shop or mining environment required.
- 2-4 years of heavy equipment mechanic experience required.
- Dependability and reliability.
- Familiarity with equipment such as cranes, loaders, haul trucks, conveyors, bulldozers, personnel transport vehicles, pumps, compressors, and pneumatic tools.
- Ability to operate testing and troubleshooting vehicles and equipment.
- Capability to repair equipment to OEM standards.
- Strong diagnostic skills to identify and correct system malfunctions.
- Proficiency in dismantling and reassembling equipment.
- Knowledge of operating lifting devices, hand, and pneumatic tools.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office and general computer programs.
- Problem-solving skills and ability to read, speak, and comprehend English.
Physical Requirements:
- Ability to work safely in varying temperatures, indoors and outdoors.
- Lift and carry up to 50+ pounds regularly.
- Wear all required PPE.
