Job description

Job Summary:

Detroit Salt Company is seeking a Diesel Mechanic responsible for maintaining, repairing, and troubleshooting heavy mining equipment such as haul trucks, loaders, drills, and conveyors. Your expertise will ensure optimal operation of our fleet and machinery, contributing to safe and efficient salt extraction. This role is ideal for individuals who enjoy hands-on work, problem-solving, and thrive in an industrial environment.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  1. Analyze malfunctions and perform repairs, rebuilds, and maintenance on power equipment including cranes, loaders, haul trucks, conveyors, bulldozers, transport vehicles, pumps, compressors, and pneumatic tools.
  2. Operate and inspect machines to diagnose defects; dismantle and reassemble equipment using hoists and hand tools; examine parts for damage or wear.
  3. Weld broken parts and structural components.
  4. Check and fill fluid levels; perform routine lubrication and preventative maintenance.
  5. Maintain a clean and safe work area through daily housekeeping.
  6. Complete work logs and paperwork accurately at the end of each shift.
  7. Follow all safety policies and procedures, remaining alert to hazards and changing conditions on mine property.
  8. Cross-train and perform varied tasks as needed.
  9. Assist with incidental tasks to support larger maintenance activities.
  10. Communicate effectively with supervisors and management regarding safety and operational issues.
  11. Troubleshoot and repair electrical and hydraulic systems promptly and accurately.
  12. Utilize technical drawings and testing equipment for diagnostics and repairs.
  13. Source and install replacement parts as needed.
  14. Perform other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • 1-year CAT SIS Program experience preferred.
  • 2-4 years of experience in an industrial shop or mining environment required.
  • 2-4 years of heavy equipment mechanic experience required.
  • Dependable and reliable.
  • Familiarity with equipment such as cranes, loaders, haul trucks, conveyors, bulldozers, transport vehicles, pumps, compressors, and pneumatic tools.
  • Ability to operate testing and troubleshooting vehicles and equipment.
  • Capable of repairing equipment to OEM standards.
  • Strong diagnostic skills to identify and correct system malfunctions.
  • Ability to dismantle and reassemble equipment.
  • Knowledge of lifting devices, hand tools, and pneumatic tools; capable of repairing engines, transmissions, and sub-assemblies.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and general computer skills.
  • Problem-solving skills and ability to communicate effectively in English.

Physical Requirements:

  • Work safely in varying temperatures and outdoor conditions year-round.
  • Lift and carry up to 50+ pounds regularly.
  • Wear all required PPE at all times.
