Job summary

XPO Logistics Freight Inc. in Illinois seeks a Mechanic Apprentice to perform routine maintenance on heavy‑duty diesel equipment, trucks and trailers. The role offers a competitive hourly pay and comprehensive benefits.

You will work day shifts, use basic tools, comply with DOT/OSHA rules, and participate in an incentive plan and education assistance; PTO, holidays, and a 401(k) match are included.

Qualifications

• 1 year of experience in tractor/trailer inspection and repair or a tech school degree with heavy-duty maintenance certification.
• Valid driver’s license.
• Availability for day, evening, and weekend shifts.
• Brake inspection qualification per FMCSA 396.25.
• Vehicle inspection qualification per FMCSA 396.19.
• Basic hand tools required for heavy-duty maintenance.

Responsibilities

• Perform routine maintenance on heavy‑duty diesel equipment, forklifts, and trailing equipment per schedules.
• Follow DOT, EPA, OSHA rules and company policies during work.
• Access equipment to inspect and perform work on vehicles and trailers.
• Repair or rebuild equipment systems as needed.
• Conduct safety inspections and document findings.
• Move trailers using hostler and document job times in repair orders.
• Operate specialized tooling and vehicles and maintain a clean, safe workspace.
• Interact with operations and shop management.

What you’ll need to succeed as a Mechanic Apprentice at XPO

• 1 year of experience in tractor and trailer inspection and repair -OR- a technical school degree with certification in heavy-duty truck/trailer maintenance
• A valid driver’s license
• Available to work a variety of shifts, including days, evenings, and weekends
• Brake inspection qualified as defined in the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration regulations, Section 396.25
• Vehicle Inspection qualified as defined in the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration regulations, Section 396.19
• Basic hand tools required for heavy-duty trailer and tractor maintenance

Preferred qualifications:

• High school diploma or equivalent work-related or military experience
• Previous or current ASE certifications
• Prior mechanical experience such as automotive or skilled trades
• Basic computer skills
• Basic welding skills such as Oxy/Acetylene, ARC and MIG

Pay, benefits and more:

• Expected pay range: $30.17 to $32.84 per hour. Pay is on an annual step progression. Actual compensation may vary due to factors such as experience and skill set.

What you’ll do on a typical day:

• Perform routine maintenance functions and adjustments on all types of heavy-duty diesel equipment, forklifts, and trailing equipment in compliance with the manufacturer, DOT, and company schedules
• Apply knowledge and work by DOT, Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), Interstate Authority, Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and other rules and regulations, as required
• Access any area of the equipment or vehicle to perform necessary maintenance, including inspecting and performing work in, on or under parts of vehicles and trailers
• Repair or rebuild equipment systems
• Conduct safety inspections of equipment and prepare safety documentation
• Move trailers throughout the property, operating a hostler in all types of weather
• Enter job times and parts on repair orders to track activity
• Operate specialized tooling and vehicles
• Ensure the work area is always clean, safe, and organized
• Interact with operations and shop management

Mechanic Apprentices are required to:

• Lift objects of various shapes, sizes, and weights frequently up to 50 lbs. And occasionally greater than 75 lbs.
• Safely walk and stand for extended periods on various surfaces that may be uneven or slippery, including working outdoors in inclement weather
• Reach (including above your head), bend, climb, push, pull, twist, squat and kneel
