Job summary

XPO is seeking a Mechanic Apprentice in Columbus, Ohio to perform routine maintenance on heavy‑duty diesel equipment, forklifts, and trailing equipment. You will work under DOT, EPA, OSHA rules and company schedules, inspecting and repairing systems and documenting work performed.

Qualified applicants have 1 year of relevant experience or a technical school credential, a valid driver’s license, and the ability to work varied shifts including evenings and weekends.

Qualifications

  • 1 year of experience in tractor and trailer inspection and repair or a technical school degree with certification in heavy-duty truck/trailer maintenance.
  • A valid driver's license and ability to work varied shifts, including days, evenings and weekends.
  • Brake inspection and vehicle inspection qualifications per FMCSA regulations.
  • Basic hand tools required for heavy-duty trailer and tractor maintenance.

Responsibilities

  • Perform routine maintenance on heavy-duty diesel equipment, forklifts and trailing equipment per schedules and regulations.
  • Inspect and repair equipment, and perform safety inspections with proper documentation.
  • Move trailers on site, operate hostler in various weather conditions, and maintain a clean, safe work area.
  • Record job times and parts, and interact with operations and shop management.

What you'll need to succeed as a Mechanic Appre ntice at XPO
  • 1 year of experience in tractor and trailer inspection and repair -OR- a technical school degree with certification in heavy-duty truck/trailer maintenance
  • A valid driver's license
  • Available to work a variety of shifts, including days, evenings, and weekends
  • Brake inspection qualified as defined in the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration regulations, Section 396.25
  • Vehicle Inspection qualified as defined in the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration regulations, Section 396.19
  • Basic hand tools required for heavy-duty trailer and tractor maintenance

Preferred qualifications:

  • High school diploma or equivalent work-related or military experience
  • Previous or current ASE certifications
  • Prior mechanical experience such as automotive or skilled trades
  • Basic computer skills
  • Basic welding skills such as Oxy/Acetylene, ARC and MIG

  • Expected pay range: $28.27 to $30.81 per hour. Pay is on an annual step progression. Actual compensation may vary due to factors such as experience and skill set.

What you'll do on a typical day:

  • Perform routine maintenance functions and adjustments on all types of heavy-duty diesel equipment, forklifts, and trailing equipment in compliance with the manufacturer, DOT, and company schedules
  • Apply knowledge and work by DOT, Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), Interstate Authority, Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and other rules and regulations, as required
  • Access any area of the equipment or vehicle to perform necessary maintenance, including inspecting and performing work in, on or under parts of vehicles and trailers
  • Repair or rebuild equipment systems
  • Conduct safety inspections of equipment and prepare safety documentation
  • Move trailers throughout the property, operating a hostler in all types of weather
  • Enter job times and parts on repair orders to track activity
  • Operate specialized tooling and vehicles
  • Ensure the work area is always clean, safe, and organized
  • Interact with operations and shop management

Mechanic Apprentices are required to:

  • Lift objects of various shapes, sizes, and weights frequently up to 50 lbs. And occasionally greater than 75 lbs.
  • Safely walk and stand for extended periods on various surfaces that may be uneven or slippery, including working outdoors in inclement weather
  • Reach (including above your head), bend, climb, push, pull, twist, squat and kneel
