Job summary

XPO is hiring a Mechanic Apprentice to perform routine maintenance on heavy-duty diesel equipment, forklifts, and trailing equipment. You will assist with inspections, repairs, and safety documentation while growing your skills in a busy shop environment.

First shift, 6:00AM-2:30PM, Monday through Friday, with a competitive package including health benefits and a 401(k) plan. Prior experience or technical training preferred; a valid license is required.

Qualifications

  • 1 year of tractor/trailer inspection and repair experience or technical school with certification in heavy-duty truck/trailer maintenance.
  • Valid driver’s license required.
  • Willingness to work days, evenings, weekends across shifts.
  • Brake inspection per FMCSA 396.25; Vehicle Inspection per 396.19.

Responsibilities

  • Perform routine maintenance on heavy-duty diesel equipment, forklifts, and trailing equipment per schedules.
  • Access equipment areas and perform inspections and maintenance on vehicles and trailers.
  • Repair or rebuild equipment systems as needed.
  • Conduct safety inspections and maintain safety documentation.
  • Move trailers on site with hostler in varied weather conditions.
  • Log job times and parts on repair orders and use specialized tooling.
  • Maintain a clean, safe, organized work area and coordinate with operations.

What you’ll need to succeed as a Mechanic Apprentice at XPO
  • 1 year of experience in tractor and trailer inspection and repair -OR- a technical school degree with certification in heavy-duty truck/trailer maintenance
  • A valid driver’s license
  • Available to work a variety of shifts, including days, evenings, and weekends
  • Brake inspection qualified as defined in the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration regulations, Section 396.25
  • Vehicle Inspection qualified as defined in the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration regulations, Section 396.19
  • Basic hand tools required for heavy-duty trailer and tractor maintenance
Preferred qualifications:
  • High school diploma or equivalent work-related or military experience
  • Previous or current ASE certifications
  • Prior mechanical experience such as automotive or skilled trades
  • Basic computer skills
  • Basic welding skills such as Oxy/Acetylene, ARC and MIG

What you’ll do on a typical day:
  • Perform routine maintenance functions and adjustments on all types of heavy-duty diesel equipment, forklifts, and trailing equipment in compliance with the manufacturer, DOT, and company schedules
  • Apply knowledge and work by DOT, Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), Interstate Authority, Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and other rules and regulations, as requiredAccess any area of the equipment or vehicle to perform necessary maintenance, including inspecting and performing work in, on or under parts of vehicles and trailers
  • Repair or rebuild equipment systems
  • Conduct safety inspections of equipment and prepare safety documentation
  • Move trailers throughout the property, operating a hostler in all types of weather
  • Enter job times and parts on repair orders to track activity
  • Operate specialized tooling and vehicles
  • Ensure the work area is always clean, safe, and organized
  • Interact with operations and shop management
Mechanic Apprentices are required to:
  • Lift objects of various shapes, sizes, and weights frequently up to 50 lbs. And occasionally greater than 75 lbs.
  • Safely walk and stand for extended periods on various surfaces that may be uneven or slippery, including working outdoors in inclement weather
  • Reach (including above your head), bend, climb, push, pull, twist, squat and kneel
