Job summary

XPO Logistics Freight Inc. is hiring a Diesel Mechanic to maintain and repair class 6–8 diesel equipment, tractors, trailers, and related systems at our LaSalle, IL location.

You’ll perform routine maintenance, troubleshoot issues, and ensure DOT/OSHA compliance while working a daytime to night shift schedule. Qualifications

• 2 years experience in tractor/trailer inspection and repair or a technical school degree with heavy-duty maintenance cert.
• EPA HVAC refrigerant recovery/cert within 90 days of hire (ASE/MACS or equivalent).
• A valid driver’s license is required.
• Basic welding and mechanical skills.
• Basic hand tools required for heavy-duty trailer/tractor maintenance.
• Basic computer skills.
• Brake inspection qualifications per FMCSA 396.25.
• Vehicle inspection qualifications per FMCSA 396.19.
• Available for days, evenings, nights and weekend shifts.

Responsibilities

• Perform routine maintenance on class 6–8 diesel equipment, tractors and trailers.
• Access equipment to perform inspection, maintenance and repairs.
• Repair or rebuild various equipment systems as needed.
• Troubleshoot and diagnose issues and perform repairs.
• Adhere to DOT, EPA, Interstate Authority and OSHA rules.
• Conduct safety inspections and document findings.
• Maintain proficiency with equipment and productivity tools.
• Move trailers on-site using a hostler; record times and parts on orders.

What you’ll need to succeed as a Diesel Mechanic at XPO

• 2 years of experience in tractor and trailer inspection and repair or a technical school degree with certification in heavy-duty truck/trailer maintenance
• Obtain EPA HVAC Refrigerant Recovery and Recycling Certification within 90 days of hire (ASE, MACS or equivalent)
• A valid driver’s license
• Basic welding skills (Oxy/Acetylene, MIG and ARC) and mechanical skills
• Basic hand tools required for heavy-duty trailer and tractor maintenance
• Basic computer skills
• Brake inspection qualified as defined in the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration regulations, Section 396.25
• Vehicle Inspection qualified as defined in the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration regulations, Section 396.19
• Available to work a variety of shifts, including days, evenings, nights, and weekends

Preferred qualifications:

• High school diploma or equivalent work-related or military experience
• Prior mechanical experience such as automotive or skilled trades
• Previous or current ASE certifications
• Experience with trailer repair, diesel engine system diagnostics and preventive maintenance for tractor technicians
• Able to diagnose and repair vehicle air conditioning systems

About the Diesel Mechanic job

Pay, benefits and more:

• Expected pay range: $36.22 to $39.96 per hour. Pay is on an annual step progression. Actual compensation may vary due to factors such as experience and skill set.
• Monday – Friday operation

What you’ll do on a typical day:

• Perform routine maintenance functions and adjustments on all types of class 6 through 8 diesel equipment, forklifts, and trailing equipment
• Access any of the equipment to perform necessary maintenance, including inspecting and performing work in, on or under part of the equipment
• Repair or rebuild all or parts of various equipment systems
• Troubleshoot and diagnose equipment and component issues and perform repairs accordingly
• Abide by DOT, EPA, Interstate Authority, OSHA and other rules and regulations
• Conduct safety inspections on equipment and prepare safety documentation as needed
• Maintain proficiency with equipment and technologies that enhance productivity
• Move trailers throughout the property, operating a hostler in all types of weather
• Enter job times and parts on repair orders to track activity
• Operate specialized tooling and vehicles
• Ensure the work area is always clean, safe, and organized
• Interact with operations and shop management

Diesel Mechanics are required to:

• Frequently lift up to 50 lbs. and occasionally lift more than 75 lbs.
• Safely walk and stand for extended periods on various surfaces that may be uneven or slippery, including working outdoors in inclement weather
• Reach (including above your head), bend, climb, push, pull, twist, squat and kneel
• Walk and stand for extended periods on a loading dock that is not climate-controlled and may be slippery
