Job description

THE POSITION

The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation, Lancaster County Maintenance Organization, is seeking passionate individuals for the role of Diesel and Construction Equipment Mechanic. This role involves maintaining and repairing equipment used in highway and bridge upkeep, ensuring safe and efficient travel. DESCRIPTION OF WORK

This position requires a certified mechanic skilled in automotive and heavy machinery. Responsibilities include performing evaluations, preventive maintenance, and repairs on construction machinery, trucks, automobiles, and hand tools, working with gasoline and diesel engines to ensure peak performance. Work Schedule and Additional Information:
  • Full-time, 7:00 AM to 3:00 PM, Monday - Friday, with a 30-minute lunch
  • Travel, overtime, and shift work may be required; hours may vary seasonally
  • No telework options available
  • Salary may be non-negotiable in some cases
REQUIRED EXPERIENCE, TRAINING & ELIGIBILITY

Qualifications:

  • Completion of the Commonwealth's Diesel and Construction Equipment Mechanic Trainee program or equivalent federal experience
  • Two years of journey-level mechanic experience, including one year with diesel vehicles or equipment
  • Or an equivalent combination of experience and training

Special Requirements:

  • Valid Class A or B Commercial Driver's License
  • Valid Medical Examiner's Certificate per FMCSA regulations

Conditions of Employment:

  • Obtain and maintain active certification from the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation for heavy trucks and loaders during probation
  • Possibility of needing specific CDL endorsements and certifications
  • Some positions may require a Pennsylvania Class 1, 4, or 7 Inspection Mechanic Certification on the first day
  • Subject to drug and alcohol testing
  • Must obtain a tanker endorsement within the probationary period
