Job summary

The Diagnostic Radiology Technician will independently provide routine and portable radiographic services for the inmate population at FCI Herlong. The position performs digital imaging, selects exposure and positioning factors, maintains radiology records and quality controls, supports equipment readiness, and coordinates clinical communication and continuity of care.

Qualifications

  • Must be fully licensed by a state Radiologic Technology Board to perform radiological procedures.
  • Must maintain current ARRT certification.
  • Must have at least one year of related work experience as a Radiologic Technologist.
  • Must maintain current CPR certification through the American Red Cross or American Heart Association.
  • Must be capable of independently performing required radiographic procedures without technical support.
  • Knowledge of digital radiographic equipment is preferred but not required.
  • Must maintain required healthcare immunizations and tuberculosis screening documentation before beginning work and during performance.
  • Must satisfy all BOP/DOJ background, institutional-security, suitability, residency, and access requirements.

Responsibilities

  • Perform routine and portable radiographic procedures ordered by medical staff, including chest, bone, skull, spine, and other required studies.
  • Independently assess and select exposure factors and patient positioning needed to obtain diagnostic-quality images.
  • Receive patients, explain procedures, and help reduce anxiety while maintaining safety and professional boundaries.
  • Recognize basic emergency situations and pathological abnormalities demonstrated by radiographic imaging.
  • Notify the radiologist or referring provider of preliminary abnormalities when additional views or examinations may be needed.
  • Schedule examinations and maintain accurate patient, examination, requisition, and daily-log records.
  • Coordinate transfer of radiology records and images to support continuity of care and interpretation.
  • Serve as a liaison between the radiologist, Clinical Director, and medical staff.
  • Evaluate equipment for calibration or repair needs and report problems promptly.
  • Perform quality-assurance testing, routine equipment maintenance, repeat analysis, and inspection or program-review support.
  • Prepare images for interpretation and complete required electronic logs, labels, and documentation.
  • Follow CDC universal precautions, infection-control requirements, BOP medical protocols, and correctional-security procedures.
  • Wear navy-blue scrubs or other professional attire appropriate to the correctional environment.

Citizenship / Access Requirements: Applicants generally must be U.S. citizens or nationals, or lawful permanent residents seeking U.S. citizenship. Non-U.S. citizens require applicable DOJ access waivers. Personnel must also satisfy the DOJ residency requirement of qualifying U.S. residence or federal overseas service for three of the previous five years, unless formally waived.

Security Requirements: Must successfully complete BOP/DOJ institutional-security and suitability processing before beginning work. Processing may include a Public Trust investigation at the risk level assigned by DOJ, security questionnaires, fingerprinting, law‑enforcement and employment checks, identity verification, a credit check when applicable, release forms, and urinalysis when applicable.

Type of Employment: Full-Time Contract Position.

Estimated Compensation: $58.19 per hour.

Working Hours: Five eight‑hour days per week, normally Monday through Friday from 7:00 AM to 3:00 PM, excluding federal holidays. Approximately 40 one‑hour sessions are expected weekly. The daily call‑out and institutional needs may alter the exact schedule.

Work Arrangement: On‑site at FCI/FPC Herlong, primarily within the Health Services Department. Remote work is not authorized.

Period of Performance: Date of award through 12 months, with four potential additional 12‑month performance periods and a possible six‑month extension, for a potential total of 66 months.

Paid Sick Leave: Accrues at one hour for every 30 hours worked, up to 56 hours annually.

Paid Time Off / Vacation: Two weeks (80 hours) after one year of service; three weeks after eight years; four weeks after 15 years.

Paid Federal Holidays: Eleven paid holidays annually.

  • Must have at least one year of related work experience as a Radiologic Technologist.
  • Must maintain current CPR certification through the American Red Cross or American Heart Association.
  • Must be capable of independently performing required radiographic procedures without technical support.
  • Knowledge of digital radiographic equipment is preferred but not required.
