Job description

Summary

The Diagnostic Radiologic Technologist (Computed Tomography) position reports to the Radiology Service within the Memphis VA Medical Center. The role involves performing computed tomography scans of the head, neck, spine, chest, and body to facilitate diagnostic studies for proper diagnosis and treatment. The incumbent may be required to work variable shifts, be on-call, and operate different modalities as needed.

Qualifications

Applicants pending the completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be considered tentatively but cannot be hired until all requirements are fulfilled.

Basic Requirements:
  • Must be a U.S. citizen; non-citizens may be appointed only when qualified citizen applicants are unavailable, in accordance with VA policy.
  • Certification in general radiologic technology by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) (R).
  • Advanced ARRT certification is required for assignments involving CT, MRI, or Mammography duties performed independently.
  • Technologists without advanced certification may receive on-the-job training under supervision, except at the GS-5 entry level where temporary waivers are permitted.
  • Completion of a 24-month full-time training course in an accredited diagnostic radiologic technology program, evidenced by a certificate or associate degree.
  • Must meet credentialing standards as per the Consumer-Patient Radiation Health and Safety Act of 1981.
  • Proficiency in spoken and written English as required by law.
Grade Determinations: GS-9

This requires specific knowledge of cross-sectional anatomy, spiral/multi-slice CT, 3-D reconstruction, and related procedures. Experience of at least one year at the GS-8 level demonstrating relevant clinical competencies is necessary.

Experience & Assignments:
  • At least one year of experience equivalent to GS-8 demonstrating required competencies.
  • Assignments above the full performance level must involve significant scope, complexity, and variety, performed at least 25% of the time.
Technical Skills & Knowledge:
  • Ability to perform complex scans balancing patient and staff needs.
  • Knowledge of relevant techniques, contraindications, basic life support, and patient care procedures.
Preferred Experience:

1-2 years as a CT technologist and certification in CT modality.

Physical Requirements:

Must have the physical ability to perform duties requiring lifting, standing, bending, transferring, and other physical tasks without assistance.

Duties
  • Perform CT scans of the head, neck, spine, chest, and body.
  • Evaluate critical and emergency procedures, prioritize patient care accordingly.
  • Ensure availability and adequacy of supplies and contrast materials.
  • Monitor examinations for optimal data and image quality.
  • Maintain and operate imaging equipment and assist in procedure manual development.
Work Schedule & Additional Details:
  • Monday-Friday, variable tours including weekends.
  • Shift options: 7:30am-4:00pm, 8:00am-4:30pm, 4:00pm-midnight, midnight-8:00am.
  • Telework: Not available; Virtual: No; Incentives: Not authorized; PCS: Not authorized.
