Job description

The Diagnostic Radiologic Technologist (Computed Tomography) position reports to the Radiology Service at the Memphis VA Medical Center. The role involves performing computed tomography scans of the head, neck, spine, chest, and body to facilitate diagnostic studies for proper diagnosis and treatment. The incumbent may be required to work variable shifts and be on-call. They may also work with different modalities.

Duties

The primary responsibilities include, but are not limited to, performing CT scans as specified above.

Qualifications

Applicants pending completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be considered tentatively but cannot be hired until all requirements are fulfilled.

Basic Requirements
  • Must be U.S. citizen: Non-citizens may be appointed only when qualified citizens cannot be recruited, according to VA policy.
  • Certification: Must be certified in general radiologic technology by ARRT (R). Advanced certification is required for assignments involving CT, MRI, or Mammography performed independently.
  • Exception for Non-Certified, Entry Level Candidates: Non-certified candidates meeting ARRT eligibility may be temporarily appointed as graduate DRT for up to two years under specific conditions.
  • Education: Completion of at least a 24-month full-time post-high school radiologic technology program, evidenced by a certificate or associate degree, accredited by JRCERT or equivalent.
  • Credentialing Standards: Must meet standards per the Consumer-Patient Radiation Health and Safety Act of 1981 and be certified as radiographers.
  • Loss of Credential: Failure to obtain or maintain certification within two years requires removal from the occupation.
  • English Language Proficiency: Must be proficient in spoken and written English as per 38 U.S.C. 7402(d) and 7407(d).

May qualify under the Grandfathering Provision if applicable.

Grade Determinations: GS-9

This modality requires knowledge of cross-sectional anatomy and its application in spiral/multi-slice CT, including 3-D reconstruction. The technologist must interpret examination requests, understand organ functions, and evaluate image quality for diagnostic purposes.

  • Experience: At least one year of related experience at the GS-8 level demonstrating necessary competencies.
  • Assignments: Perform complex imaging procedures independently, including special and complex scans, clinical instruction, and quality management duties. Must demonstrate specific KSAs such as balancing patient needs, gathering relevant information, assessing contraindications, and knowledge of patient care practices.
Preferred Experience

1-2 years as a CT technologist with certification in CT modality.

Physical Requirements

Must have the physical ability to perform duties involving lifting, standing, bending, transferring, and other physical activities. A health examination is required prior to assignment and periodically thereafter.
