Summary
The Diagnostic Radiologic Technologist (Computed Tomography - CT) at the GS-9 level serves at an advanced level. The incumbent performs a broad range of duties in general radiology and computed tomography at the Syracuse - NY VAMC. Advanced certification in CT by the ARRT is required. The incumbent will spend approximately 90% of the time in General Radiology and 10% in Computed Tomography - CT.
Qualifications
Applicants pending completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be considered tentatively but cannot be hired until all requirements are met.
Basic Requirements:
- U.S. Citizenship: Non-citizens may be appointed only when qualified citizens are unavailable, per VA policy.
- Certification: All applicants must be certified in general radiologic technology by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) (R).
- Advanced ARRT certification is required for duties involving CT, MRI, or Mammography performed independently.
- Certification indicates the ability to operate independently and clinical competency in the specialty.
- Education: Completion of a 24-month or equivalent post-high school diagnostic radiologic technology program, accredited by JRCERT or recognized agency.
- Credentialing Standards: Must meet standards of the Consumer-Patient Radiation Health and Safety Act of 1981, including certification as radiographers.
- Exception for Non-Certified - Entry Level: Non-certified candidates meeting ARRT (R) eligibility may be temporarily appointed as graduate DRTs for up to two years under supervision.
- Loss of Credential: Failure to obtain or maintain certification within two years may result in removal from the occupation.
- Grandfathering Provision: Employees in VHA as DRT on the effective date are considered to meet all requirements.
- Physical Requirements: Refer to VA Directive and Handbook 5019.
- Grade Requirements: For GS-09, at least one year of experience at the GS-08 level demonstrating required competencies.
Duties
- Prioritize and triage imaging requests in the CT and general radiology sections.
- Perform general radiology, portable radiology, and O.R. radiology exams independently.
- Perform advanced CT procedures such as Cardiac CT and Angiography.
- Perform complex radiographic studies with minimal supervision.
- Serve as a proctor for clinical requirements for CT ARRT board admission.
- Supervise and document ARRT requirements for didactic and lab training.
- Perform all advanced CT procedures, including complex patient examinations with minimal physician supervision.
- Perform venipuncture for contrast exams.
- Assist in procedures in other modalities as needed.
- Perform general X-ray, fluoroscopy, pain blocks, DEXA scans, and CT duties.
- Work schedule includes days, evenings, nights, weekends, and holidays; flexible scheduling not available.
