Development Manager

Wrench Group is seeking a motivated and experienced Development Manager to lead our Web and Backend Services development team. This role is a mix of people leadership, technical guidance, and delivery management, best suited for someone who thrives in an Agile environment and is passionate about growing developers both technically and professionally.

As Development Manager, you will guide a cross‑functional team of web and backend engineers, ensuring technical excellence, fostering a collaborative team culture, and supporting individual career growth. You’ll work closely with product managers, architects, and QA to deliver scalable and high‑quality services that power our products.

What Will I Do?
  • Manage a team of software developers across web and backend technologies.
  • Conduct regular 1:1s, provide performance feedback, and support career development.
  • Foster a collaborative, inclusive, and psychologically safe team environment.
  • Act as a coach and mentor to help team members grow their skills and achieve their goals.
  • Technical Guidance & Delivery
  • Guide the team in designing, developing, and maintaining scalable and reliable backend services and modern web applications.
  • Collaborate with technical leads and architects to ensure strong engineering practices.
  • Ensure high‑quality code through practices like code reviews, pair programming, and test automation.
  • Agile Practices & Project Delivery
  • Champion Agile principles (Scrum/Kanban/Lean) to drive team efficiency and adaptability.
  • Facilitate sprint planning, retrospectives, and ongoing process improvement.
  • Coordinate with Product Management and other stakeholders to ensure the timely delivery of features and initiatives.
  • Operational Excellence
  • Ensure systems are built with observability, performance, security, and scalability in mind.
  • Partner with the Infrastructure team to support DevOps, CI/CD, and cloud‑native deployment strategies.
  • Track and improve team metrics like cycle time, lead time, and deployment frequency.
Do I Have What It Takes?
  • 7+ years of software engineering experience, with 3+ years in a management or team leadership role.
  • Proven experience managing full‑stack or backend‑focused teams in a production environment.
  • Strong understanding of Agile methodologies and experience leading Agile teams.
  • Technical depth in modern web frameworks and backend development (e.g., Node.js, React, Adobe AEM, .Net, Java)
  • Experience with RESTful APIs, microservices, and cloud platforms (AWS, Azure, or GCP).
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to work cross‑functionally.
  • A passion for developing people and building high‑performing, engaged engineering teams.
  • Experience in scaling engineering teams and mentoring developers.
  • Familiarity with DevOps practices and tools (CI/CD, containerization, monitoring).
  • Previous hands‑on experience as a Senior Engineer or Tech Lead.
  • Experience in a startup or fast‑paced product environment.
