Qualifications

• Must have completed High School/GED or 12 college hours with a C or better.
• Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing, with staff, inmates, and the public.
• Must be able to pass a polygraph, psychological exam, and extensive background check.
• To become a full Detention Service Officer, one year of jailer experience and completion of field training and statutes course are required.

Responsibilities

• Supervise and control inmates during booking, holdover, confinement, recreation, visitation, and release.
• Perform searches, finger-printing, photo taking, and ensure inmate safety before housing or release.
• Escort inmates, manage clothing, bedding, and transfers to court or release.
• Oversee release of money and property, monitor inmate behavior, and conduct head counts.
• Operate doors, elevators, meals, sanitation, and security within the jail facility.
• Escort inmates to law library, recreation, and other services; verify authorized visitors.
