Job summary

The Dallas County Sheriff's Office is seeking a Detention Service Officer to supervise inmates during booking, holdover, and confinement within a secure jail facility in Dallas, TX. The role emphasizes safety, security, and orderly operations.

Responsibilities include searches, fingerprinting, escorting inmates, and managing inmate property and movement. Candidates must meet education requirements, pass polygraph/psychological tests, and undergo background checks; drug testing is mandatory.

Qualifications

• Graduation from an accredited High School/GED or twelve college hours with grade C or better.
• Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing, and establish relationships with staff and the public.
• Must be at least 18 years old and pass polygraph, psychological, and extensive background checks.
• One year of jailer experience and completion of field training and courses on state/federal statutes.
• Mandatory drug testing prior to employment and random, unannounced testing during employment.
• Must obtain and maintain all State and Sheriff’s Department commissioning requirements.

Responsibilities

• Supervise inmates during booking, holdover, identification, confinement, recreation, visitation, and release.
• Perform initial searches, fingerprinting, arrest photos and inventory of items.
• Escort inmates to arraignments and court, and monitor inmate movement.
• Classify and compare fingerprints to confirm inmate identity.
• Oversee removal, bagging, and storage of inmate clothing and property.
• Control doors, elevators, and inmate movement to maximize safety and security.
• Supervise meals, laundering, clothing, bedding, and sanitation inside the facility.
• Escort inmates to law library, recreation, and religious services; verify authorized visitors.
