Job summary

The City of Dallas is seeking an intermediary level custody officer to perform prisoner guard and processing duties at the Dallas County jail (Lew Sterrett Justice Center). The role requires strong de-escalation skills and the ability to handle difficult situations in a controlled manner.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Two years of relevant work experience.
  • Valid Texas driver’s license or Texas ID.
  • Attend and complete DPD Detention Officer course; annual refresher training.
  • No felony or Class A/B misdemeanor convictions.
  • Must be 18 years of age.

Responsibilities

  • Escort and guard prisoners from book-in to medical screening and holding areas.
  • Monitor prisoners and restrain where necessary using approved methods.
  • Assist officers with book-in and incident reporting.
  • De-escalate situations and communicate clearly with staff and prisoners.
  • Maintain logs and write incident reports for the jail.
  • Perform duties related to nurses’ line functions as assigned.
  • Accept prisoners from marshals, officers, and arson investigators.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
