Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED is required.
• Must be a U.S. citizen.
• Must attain certification by the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement as a Jailer within one year of employment.
• Possession of a valid Driver's License. Must be able to obtain a State of Texas driver's license within 90 days.
• Applicants may be subject to fingerprint-based criminal history and background investigation; CJIS and TCOLE requirements apply.

Responsibilities

• Admits prisoners to the County Jail; ensures proper booking, searching, and inmate calls to attorneys/relatives.
• Reviews logs and reports; maintains inmate population knowledge and cell assignments.
• Patrols jail area to prevent escapes; monitors interior/exterior perimeters; video-tapes inmates; monitors emergency systems.
• Supervises inmate trustees performing meals, chores, and laundry.
• Issues linen, clothing, and supplies; oversees cafeteria area; handles mail and inmate property.
• Selects housing assignments according to custody classifications; updates custody status and bond changes; conducts daily population counts.
• Inspects jail cleanliness to meet state/local requirements.
• Transports inmates to court, visits, or medical appointments; escorts work-release inmates; conducts inmate searches on return.
• Performs life safety duties requiring CPR and fire safety training.
• Answers public inquiries concerning inmate status; assists visitors; inspects items brought to jail.
• Mails packages for inmates; maintains log of inmate property.
