Organizational context: This Desktop Publishing Assistant position is within the Meetings Support Section of the Department for General Assembly and Conference Management (DGACM) at the UN Secretariat. The role is based in New York and reports to the Team Lead of the Desktop Publishing Team, contributing to the production of official UN documentation.

Job purpose:

Job purpose: The Desktop Publishing Assistant plays a crucial role in the production of official UN documentation, supplements, and publications. This involves utilizing digital publishing technologies to ensure documents meet formatting and typographical standards, conforming to both draft translations and original manuscripts. The role requires incorporating editorial changes accurately, performing layout corrections, and assisting senior staff. Additionally, the incumbent will retrieve documents from the UN Official Documents System, verify terminology, and support the updating of information materials like web pages and brochures, ensuring timely and high-quality output for the Meetings Support Section.

Responsibilities:

This involves incorporating edits from reporters, revisers, and editors, ensuring final documents adhere to content and formatting guidelines. The role requires performing necessary formatting and layout corrections, and alerting supervisors to any discrepancies. The Assistant will also retrieve documents from the UN Official Documents System, research terminology, and assist senior Desktop Publishing Assistants. Flexibility with shifts, overtime availability, and support for updating information materials such as web pages and brochures are also expected.

Education:

Education: A high school diploma or equivalent is required. Further studies or certifications in desktop publishing, proofreading, or a related field are considered desirable.

Work experience:

Work experience: A minimum of five years of progressive experience in digital publishing technologies, including typing, copy editing, proofreading, and typographical layout, is required. Proficiency with digital publishing and design applications like Adobe InDesign is essential. Experience within the UN system or similar international organizations, along with multichannel publishing or content management tools, is desirable.
