Job summary

McKinstry in Richmond, VA, seeks an experienced Associate Electrical Engineer to join the Engineering and Design team. You will support DER clients, lead high‑quality, innovative electrical design solutions, and collaborate with internal and external stakeholders to ensure successful project outcomes.

You will mentor engineers, manage design timelines and budgets, and stay current with industry trends and standards. This role emphasizes leadership, technical excellence, and client coordination.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in engineering or equivalent work experience.
• Professional Engineer registration and ability to acquire licensure in additional states.
• 8–10 years’ experience in Electrical Engineering in the built environment.
• Experience in design and construction of commercial and light industrial electrical systems, emergency power systems, low voltage systems, and medium‑voltage campus distribution.
• Ability to evaluate power systems and perform studies for arc flash, short circuit current, coordination, and load flow analysis.

Responsibilities

• Lead the design and implementation of electrical design projects, including building electrical distribution systems, lighting and control systems, emergency power systems, and medium‑voltage campus distribution systems.
• Collaborate with internal teams and external partners to establish and uphold best practices in building electrical design and delivery.
• Oversee engineering analyses to support pre‑design efforts and sales proposals, ensuring alignment with objectives.
• Develop and maintain technical standards for electrical engineering projects and guide team on design requirements and deadlines.
• Support junior engineers’ growth through training in electrical design standards and project technologies.
