Description

The Gaston County Office of Emergency Management provides planning, coordination, and resources to enable emergency responders and citizens to work together to mitigate, prepare for, respond to, and recover from incidents threatening or occurring in Gaston County.

Examples of Duties

The following are essential duties, not an exhaustive list:

  1. Research, formulate, and execute disaster and emergency preparedness plans and operational procedures for effective response during man-made and natural disasters.
  2. Lead planning and coordination meetings; develop multi-agency operational plans for large-scale events and incidents, including workshops, functional courses, and full-scale exercises with local, state, and regional partners.
  3. Conduct or supervise public education presentations to promote community preparedness.
  4. Supervise and administer the Emergency Management and Fire Services Divisions, including performance management, employee relations, work prioritization, and related activities.
  5. Assist with budget preparation and monitor operating funds, grants, etc.
  6. Collaborate with federal, state, and local partners to enhance public safety responsiveness and efficiency. Participate in committees and boards to establish safety goals and policies.
  7. Coordinate emergency services at the Emergency Operations Center during incidents or events.
  8. Establish and maintain effective working relationships with law enforcement, EMS, fire, emergency management, and county agencies.
  9. Oversee recovery initiatives to restore services and ensure citizen well-being.
  10. Serve as the Deputy Fire Marshal.
  11. Report directly to the Director and perform duties as assigned, including acting in the Director's absence.

Minimum Qualifications

Minimum Requirements :

  • Associate's Degree in a Fire or Emergency Management related field
  • At least 15 years of experience in public safety
  • At least 10 years of leadership experience in public safety
  • Valid Driver's License
  • Certifications in ICS 100, 200, 300, 400, 700, 800, Certified Fire Fighter II, and Haz-Mat Ops

Preferred Requirements :

  • Bachelor's Degree (or Master's) in a Fire or Emergency Management related field from an accredited institution

Proficiency in computer operations, word processing, spreadsheets, databases, GIS, and internet use. Ability to work in various conditions including day/night shifts, heat, cold, ice, snow, and in potentially dangerous situations.

The selected candidate must pass a drug screening prior to employment.
