Job description

Employees may be assigned to patrol, narcotics, civil process, warrants, courthouse security, criminal investigation, or school policing. Depending on the area of assignment, duties may include undercover and surveillance work, patrol, civil and criminal process serving, or investigative tasks.

Criminal Enforcement Division

Depending on individual assignments, examples of work performed may include, but are not limited to:

1. Patrol an assigned area, generally by vehicle, to prevent crimes and enforce laws and regulations.
2. Respond to emergency calls and routine complaints, taking necessary action.
3. Issue traffic citations and direct traffic.
4. Investigate traffic accidents and crimes against persons and property; assist federal, state, and local law enforcement officials.
5. Maintain records of activities and prepare reports concerning crimes, complaints, accidents, and investigations.
6. File cases with the District Attorney or U.S. Attorney.
7. Make lawful arrests for violations of laws for the State of Texas and local ordinances or resolutions.
8. Serve felony, misdemeanor, and mental commitment warrants; make arrests.
9. Question witnesses and suspects; take statements and depositions.
10. Assist other law enforcement agencies as needed.
11. Perform surveillance of suspects and designated locations.
12. Meet with informants and conduct undercover narcotics work.
13. Handle and care for dogs involved in narcotics investigations.
14. Conduct background investigations for law enforcement and corrections applicants.
15. Serve as a bailiff in county and district courts.
16. Gather and label evidence, take photographs and fingerprints, guard and transport prisoners, and testify in court.
17. Engage with community groups to promote public relations and inform citizens about police activities and crime prevention.
18. May be responsible for animal control, especially related to cattle on roadways.
19. Return arrested persons to various locations in and out of state.
20. Perform any other duties assigned by the Sheriff’s Office.

Minimum qualifications include a high school diploma or equivalent (GED). Prior law enforcement experience is preferred. Applicants must possess a Basic Peace Officer Certification from the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement (TCOLE), a valid Texas driver’s license, and be insurable by the county’s insurance carrier.

Required skills include the ability to understand and follow instructions, establish effective working relationships, analyze situations, write reports, learn to operate department equipment, communicate effectively, solve basic math problems, read and interpret documents, and speak and write in English; proficiency in Spanish is preferred.
