Job summary

The City of Elkhart, Indiana, is seeking a Deputy Controller to serve as second-in-command in the Controller’s Office, overseeing accounting, financial reporting, budget administration, internal controls, and department personnel.

Reporting directly to the City Controller, the Deputy Controller provides leadership, supports strategic financial planning, ensures accurate information, and coordinates audits, with duties in the absence of the Controller.

Qualifications

• Advanced knowledge of governmental accounting, budgeting, and internal controls.
• Experience with fund accounting and SBOA reporting preferred.
• Ability to lead, supervise, and communicate with city staff effectively.
• CPA/CGFM/CPFO desirable.

Responsibilities

• Provide day-to-day leadership and accountability for Controller’s Office operations.
• Assist in developing and administering the annual City budget.
• Oversee general ledger accuracy, fund accounting, and month-end close.
• Lead preparation of Annual Financial Report and required governmental submissions.
• Coordinate audit preparation and readiness for SBOA examinations.
• Supervise assigned personnel and develop staff.
