Job summary

Georgia Department of Public Health is seeking a dental assistant to support a school-based dental prevention program within the Coastal Health District. You will assist the dentist and hygienist, take X-rays, educate clients on oral hygiene, and help with administrative duties and record-keeping.

The role requires a High School diploma or GED with relevant dental experience or a dental assisting degree with one year of experience; bilingual English/Spanish is preferred.

Qualifications

  • High School diploma or GED with two years of experience in a dental setting, or a vocational/technical degree in dental assisting with one year of experience.
  • One year of experience at the Dental Assistant 2 level or equivalent is acceptable.
  • Bilingual English/Spanish is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Assist dentist and dental hygienist in management of medical and dental emergencies.
  • Take X-rays as prescribed by the dentist.
  • Instruct clients in oral hygiene and plaque control programs.
  • Prepare clients, sterilize instruments, set up trays, assist during dental treatment, and clean the room.
  • Record monthly data and assist with school-based program activities including sealants and health education.
  • Assist with administrative duties of the Oral Health Program including intake and scheduling.
  • Maintain patient records following HIPAA and clinical guidelines.
  • Comply with infection control protocols and OSHA regulations.

Provides support for school based dental prevention program

All Coastal Health District County Health Department employees are deemed essential employees in the event of an emergency. As such, you may be called on to participate in an event not limited to but including, staffing a shelter, a Specimen Point of Collection Site (SPOC) and/or Point of Dispensing site (POD). When you are called on to participate, you are expected and it will be a part of your job requirement to participate, whether the emergency occurs during or outside regular work hours.

Responsibilities
  • Assists dentist and dental hygienist in management of medical and dental emergencies
  • Takes x-rays as prescribed by dentist
  • Instructs a client in oral hygiene and plaque control programs
  • Prepares clients, sterilizes instruments, sets up instrument trays, prepares materials, assists dentist during dental treatment, and cleans room
  • Records monthly data
  • Assists with all aspects of school-based program including sealants, dental health education programs, and health fairs
  • Assists with administrative duties of Oral Health Program including intake process and scheduling appointments
  • Records treatment information in client records
  • Follows clinical guidelines of record documentation and HIPPA regulations
  • Practices infection control according to clinical protocol and OSHA regulations
Qualifications
  • High School diploma/GED and two (2) years of experience in a dental setting; or a Vocational/Technical degree in dental assisting from an accredited college and one (1) year of experience as a dental assistant; or one (1) year experience at the lower level Dental Asst 2 (HCS011) or position equivalent.
  • Bilingual English/Spanish preferred
