Summary Statement
An incumbent reports to a technical supervisor. Work includes preparing clients for treatment, chairside assisting, taking and developing dental radiographs, and providing post-care instruction. Incumbents are responsible for sterilizing and maintaining instruments and equipment. Additionally, the incumbent performs administrative duties in support of patient management for a dental clinic attached to a skilled nursing facility.
Essential Functions
Essential functions are fundamental, core duties common to all positions in the class series and are not intended to be an exhaustive list. Since class specifications are descriptive and not restrictive, incumbents may complete similar job duties not specifically listed here. Responsibilities include assisting the dentist and/or dental hygienist during chairside procedures such as operative, preventive, periodontal, endodontic, prosthetic, limited orthodontics, and oral surgery. Keep oral areas clean during procedures using retraction, suction, and irrigation. Prepare and assist with dental materials and instrument setup. Take and develop radiographs. Disinfect environmental surfaces and sterilize instruments and equipment following federal, state, and institutional infection control standards. Organize and maintain dental instruments, equipment, and maintenance logs. Provide patient education on oral hygiene, including brushing and flossing, under the direction of the dentist or dental hygienist. Greet patients and answer telephones. Coordinate scheduling to ensure a full patient schedule and reduce missed appointments. Maintain patient records (paper and electronic) by entering, updating, and retrieving information. Confirm insurance eligibility. Record charting, examination, and treatment details as relayed by clinical staff. Update dental records with CDT codes, diagnosis codes, dates of service, and billing information. Maintain inventory and order supplies. May assist in training dental assistant trainees and volunteers.
Job Requirements
Applicants must demonstrate competence in the following areas: possession of a Delaware Dental Radiation Technician Certification or a Dental Radiation Technologist Certification from the Dental Assisting National Board (DANB). A valid driver’s license (not suspended, revoked, or canceled, or disqualified from driving) is also required.
Conditions of Hire
Applicants must be legally authorized to work in the United States. The State of Delaware participates in the Federal E-Verify system to confirm employment eligibility. Pre-employment drug testing and a satisfactory criminal background check are required, with the latter possibly at the applicant’s expense.
