Job summary

A leading company is seeking a Bus Mechanic Apprentice to join their world-class team. The apprentice will learn to perform mechanical tasks, maintenance, and repairs on vehicles, ensuring they gain the necessary technical skills.

  • Demonstrated strong mechanical aptitude?
  • Interest in bus & vehicle engine repair?
  • Verifiable high school diploma or GED?

Are you prepared to...

  • Work for rabbittransit for 5 years? (If not, must pay back the cost of training, which is thousands of dollars)
  • Work 3rd or 2nd shift, both involving weekend work (NOT a choice, but assigned per union seniority bid system) after completing the two-year apprentice program?

2-year Apprentice program involves:

  • Online learning sessions on-site at rabbittransit with Pennsylvania College of Technology faculty and weekly tests;
  • Hands-on lab learning at Pennsylvania College of Technology, including week-long, overnight stays (lodging provided) near Williamsport, PA (must have valid driver’s license to drive our vehicle to training);
  • On-the-job training at rabbittransit, Harrisburg, PA, with mentors.

Shift:

  • 1st shift during the initial 2-year Apprentice Program, but must be able to work night shift after completion;
  • Post-program, must be able to work 3rd or 2nd shift, involving weekends, based on union seniority.

Must be able to work any shift assigned within operating hours, which include Sundays and Saturdays, as per union seniority.

Commitment: Willing to work for rabbittransit for five years on the assigned shift; otherwise, will need to reimburse training costs.

Willing and able to earn industry-recognized credentials such as:

  • EPA 609 Motor Vehicle Air Conditioning Certificate
  • Class 7 PA State Motor Vehicle Inspection
  • CDL Class B Driver's License with Passenger and Air Brake Endorsements

Education: High school diploma or equivalent required.

Preferred candidate qualifications include:

  • At least one year of verifiable full-time experience as a maintenance technician diagnosing and repairing medium and heavy-duty vehicles, or successful vocational training;
  • Knowledge of vehicle maintenance, repair principles, tools, and federal regulations;
  • Ability to diagnose and repair vehicles, with problem-solving skills.

Must have:

  • Ability to work variable shifts and overtime;
  • Proficiency in English, reading manuals, and using computer applications;
  • Good record-keeping skills;
  • Minimum 18 years old, with acceptable driving record and background check;
  • Regular attendance and punctuality.

Certificates and Licenses:

  • Valid CDL Class B with passenger endorsement and air brake restriction lifted (must obtain within first year if not already held);
  • Valid DOT medical card;
  • Subject to US DOT drug and alcohol testing policies.

Pay: $22.92/hour during training, $24.20/hour after probation for 12 months, and $25.47/hour after 12 months with a $750 annual tool allowance.

Job Summary:

The Apprentice performs basic mechanical tasks, diagnoses malfunctions, conducts preventative maintenance, state inspections, and repairs on all Authority vehicles under supervision, developing technical skills in vehicle maintenance.
