Position Description Summary:The George Washington University Libraries and Academic Innovation (GWLAI) enriches the academic experience of scholars and students and sparks innovation at GW. We enable research and teaching through access to the latest scholarship and rich archival resources, tailored support for researchers at all levels, guidance for faculty exploring new teaching methods and technologies, and robust support for online education. GWLAI fosters collaboration through partnerships, workshops, and project management, supporting the university's mission to generate, access, and preserve knowledge. As a member of the AAU since 2023, GW is at an exciting point, with GWLAI playing a key role in advancing research and scholarly activities.

GWLAI seeks a collaborative, service-oriented Data Services Librarian to join the Research and User Services (RUS) department. RUS is a collaborative unit where librarians support student, faculty, and researcher needs across disciplines. The librarian will provide research support, instruction, and collection development focused on data-related fields, with a keen interest or expertise in emerging technology trends, data literacy, and analytical tools. The role involves assisting with datasets, visualization tools, and statistical software, supporting open access, and promoting open scholarly communication and publishing practices.
Specific Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Collaborate with campus units to support research data management, including advising on data management plans, preservation, storage, and sharing, ensuring compliance with funding requirements.
  • Develop services to aid researchers in data discovery, access, analysis, management, preservation, and publication across disciplines.
  • Promote an institutional culture of openness, understanding issues related to research workflows, transparency, and reproducibility.
  • Expand data-related workshops, covering programming, data markup, APIs, data cleaning, and manipulation.
  • Lead and inform GWLAI staff about current data trends, tools, and resources.
  • Build partnerships with faculty and students, supporting curricular and research needs.
  • Conduct library instruction for undergraduate and graduate courses, including collaboration with GW's Writing Program.
  • Support open data, OERs, and scholarly communication initiatives.
  • Contribute to research and data consultations, and support computational literacy and thinking.
  • Engage in collection development and faculty support through active engagement.
  • Learn new skills and collaborate with researchers and campus partners to enhance visibility of GW scholarship.
  • Share knowledge through professional venues and service commitments.
Minimum Qualifications:
  • ALA-accredited Master's degree in library or information science or relevant experience.
  • Ability to support research data management and analysis.
  • Familiarity with statistical, geospatial, qualitative, or text analysis software such as SPSS, Stata, SAS, R, Python, ArcGIS, NVivo, or data visualization tools.
  • Strong collaboration skills and commitment to supporting an inclusive research community.
  • Proactive, results-oriented, with excellent communication skills.
  • Knowledge of current research data management trends and challenges.
Advertised Salary:Librarian 1: $58,566 - $65,000; Librarian 2: $61,156 - $78,000; Librarian 3: $65,156 - $81,000; Librarian 4: $71,656 - $130,000
Other Benefits:Salary depends on qualifications and rank; competitive for DC-area academic libraries. Benefits include paid leave, holidays, health insurance, retirement plans, tuition assistance, professional development, and parental leave. The position offers a hybrid work schedule and is a reappointment position with 1-5 year periods. Proven professional engagement is expected.
