Data Center Technician I

Location: Fort Wayne, IN
Schedule/Shift: Transitioning to 12-hour shifts, 6 days per week; 1st Shift: 6:00 AM-6:00 PM or 2nd Shift: 6:00 PM-6:00 AM
Pay: $25.00-$26.00 per hour

Job Summary

The Data Center Technician I supports the installation, maintenance, testing, and decommissioning of network and structured cabling infrastructure within a data center environment. This role requires previous low-voltage or infrastructure cabling experience, including pulling and terminating copper and fiber cabling, rack and stack activities, and cable pathway installation. The technician will follow established safety, quality, and documentation standards while working collaboratively with technical teams to complete projects efficiently. Candidates should be comfortable working in an active data center environment and performing physically demanding tasks throughout the shift.

Job Responsibilities

• Install and decommission network equipment and structured cabling infrastructure in a data center environment.
• Pull, route, dress, label, and terminate copper and fiber cabling.
• Terminate Cat5 and Cat6 cabling according to established wiring standards.
• Install cable trays, ladder racks, and associated cable pathway components.
• Perform rack and stack activities for network and infrastructure equipment.
• Assist with fiber trunk preparation, furcation, splicing, and related fiber installation activities.
• Perform copper and fiber cable testing and basic troubleshooting.
• Operate cable testing equipment, including DSX-series testers and OTDR equipment.
• Program testing equipment and verify, save, and document test results.
• Create and apply cable and port labels according to project documentation.
• Identify active cabling and distinguish it from cabling scheduled for decommissioning.
• Support service swaps involving active networking equipment.
• Read and interpret floor plans, blueprints, design documents, port maps, and redline documentation.
• Maintain accurate project documentation and service records.
• Follow all applicable safety procedures, quality standards, codes, and industry best practices.
• Maintain clean and organized data center work areas.
• Communicate project progress, issues, and obstacles to appropriate team members.
• Follow daily work direction from senior technicians, leads, and operations leadership.

Job Requirements

• Previous experience with structured cabling, low-voltage cabling, telecommunications cabling, or data center infrastructure.
• Experience pulling copper and fiber optic cable.
• Experience terminating Cat5 and Cat6 cabling.
• Familiarity with fiber optic cabling, fiber trunks, and basic fiber testing or troubleshooting.
• Experience with rack and stack activities and cable management preferred.
• OSHA 10 certification required.
• Knowledge of basic telecommunications hand tools.
• Understanding of wiring schemes, cable labeling, and cable testing procedures.
• Ability to read and interpret floor plans, blueprints, and technical documentation.
• Basic understanding of copper and fiber cable testing and troubleshooting.
• Familiarity with DSX-series cable testers, OTDR testers, or similar testing equipment preferred.
• Experience with fusion splicing, including ribbon or single-fiber splicing, preferred.
• Ability to install ladder racking and related cable support systems.
• Ability to maintain organized documentation and accurately record completed work.
• Strong communication and customer service skills.
• Understanding of workplace and jobsite safety requirements.
• Ability to work effectively in a data center environment.
• Ability to walk, stand, bend, and perform physical activities for extended periods.
• Ability to climb ladders and work from raised platforms.
• Ability to pull cable and perform repetitive hand and arm movements.
• Ability to lift and carry equipment weighing up to 50 pounds.
• Ability to use computers, testing equipment, scanners, and other technical tools.
• Successful completion of a background check required.

• Position is contract-to-hire.
• Schedule is transitioning to a 12-hour shift model operating 6 days per week.
• 1st Shift: 6:00 AM-6:00 PM.
• 2nd Shift: 6:00 PM-6:00 AM.
• Candidates should indicate whether they are available for 1st Shift, 2nd Shift, or both.
• Reliable attendance and availability for the assigned shift are required.
• No routine travel is required.
