Job Summary
The Custodian cleans and maintains the school building and grounds, sets up equipment for special events, and assists school personnel with work requests.
Essential Job Functions
- Clean assigned areas, assist with general cleanup, and perform emergency cleaning as needed.
- Inspect, maintain, and make minor repairs on heating, cooling, boilers, electrical, mechanical, and sound equipment.
- Change air filters as needed.
- Maintain and repair custodial and groundskeeping equipment.
- Maintain and repair fixtures and furniture; assemble furniture.
- Assist students with lockers, doors, baskets, and bleachers.
- Care for grounds, including watering, fertilizing, mowing, trimming, trash pickup, and snow removal; operate related equipment.
- Prepare and maintain athletic fields and gym floors; install and maintain athletic equipment; assist in refinishing gym floors.
- Set up and clean up for school events and programs.
- Assist with community functions, including setup, crowd control, and cleanup.
- Assist cafeteria staff with heavy lifting, cleanup, waste disposal, and spill cleanup.
- Maintain building security, perform weekend and holiday checks, and maintain fire and burglar alarms; respond to emergencies.
- Check emergency lights and fire extinguishers.
- Stock supplies, check shipments, and sign for deliveries.
- Assist with work requests, errands, scheduling, inventory, and paperwork.
- Open classrooms for substitutes, students, and community programs.
- Coordinate repairs with district maintenance.
- Maintain inventory of supplies and assist in maintaining order.
Qualifications
- High School diploma or equivalent
- At least 3 months of relevant experience or equivalent education and experience
- District custodial training certification
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Basic reading, writing, and math skills
- Understanding of cleaning, sanitation, and emergency procedures
- Knowledge of SDS
- Ability to operate and repair small to medium equipment and machinery
- Proficiency with office equipment and computers
- Property and inventory maintenance skills
Physical Demands
Heavy work exerting up to 50 pounds frequently and 20 pounds constantly; physical abilities include balancing, climbing, crouching, grasping, handling, hearing, kneeling, lifting, pulling, pushing, reaching, repetitive motion, speaking, standing, stooping, talking, visual acuity, and walking.
