Job summary

OU Health seeks a Certified Patient Care Technician (CTA) for the Cardiovascular Unit on the night shift. Under general supervision of a registered nurse, you perform routine patient care tasks and support the care team in monitoring patients.

You will take vitals, assist with procedures, manage telemetry, collect specimens, and help with admissions, discharges, and transports, while following established care plans and safety protocols.

Responsibilities

  • Monitor patient's health status and implement the plan of care under RN supervision.
  • Carry out physician and nursing orders within scope.
  • Take and record vitals and measurements.
  • Perform blood glucose monitoring and telemetry setup.
  • Perform sterile procedures and wound care as directed.
  • Assist with admissions, discharges, and transfers.
  • Transport patients as needed and maintain clean, orderly rooms.

Job Description:

Under general supervision of a registered nurse, performs routine tasks in patient care.

Responsibilities listed in this section are core to the position. Inability to perform these responsibilities with or without an accommodation may result in disqualification from the position.

Essential Responsibilities
  • Under general supervision of the RN and in collaboration with the patient and family, systematically and continually monitors the patient's health status and implements the plan of care.
  • Carries out physician and nursing orders as directed by the RN that is within scope.
  • Takes/records blood pressures, temperatures, pulse and weighs patients.
  • Performs blood glucose monitoring.
  • Sets up and discontinues telemetry monitor.
  • Collects specimens as directed.
  • Applies sterile dressings, removal of sutures, staples and/or drains. Performs all sterile procedures as assigned.
  • Performs stomal irrigation and applies colostomy pouches.
  • Performs oral suctioning.
  • Takes emergency actions as needed and within scope.
  • Performs all treatments and procedures as defined on initial skills checklist.
  • Reports symptoms and significant changes in patient's condition or behavior to RN.
  • Assists with admission, discharge and transfer process.
  • Transports patients to and from various treatment centers when necessary; assists transporters in moving patients in and out of stretchers and wheelchairs.
  • Keeps the patient's room in clean and orderly condition; makes beds, replaces soiled linen.
  • Assists in restocking rooms with supplies and equipment as directed.
  • When assigned to one patient as a safety attendant, provides care, observes the patient and does not leave the patient alone.
  • May precept new CTAs.
General Responsibilities

Education Requirements
  • HS Diploma or GED required.
Experience Requirements
  • No experience required.
License/Certification/Registration Requirements
  • Current Basic Life Support issued by the American Heart Association required.
  • Certified Patient Care Technician (CPCT) OR Patient Care Technician (PCTC) OR Advanced Unlicensed Assistant (AUA) required.
Knowledge/Skills/Abilities
  • Knowledge of basic nursing techniques and procedures.
  • Ability to communicate effectively.
  • Ability to follow written and oral instructions.
  • Ability to maintain effective working relations with others.
