Job summary

Brookhaven National Laboratory's Omega Group seeks a highly skilled mechanical technician to support assembly, qualification, installation, and commissioning of detector systems for ATLAS HL-LHC Upgrade and LBNF/DUNE. You will collaborate with an international team of scientists, technicians, and engineers at BNL, CERN, and partner labs in a fast-paced, highly precise environment.

The role requires hands-on experience in cleanroom assembly, machine shop prototyping, and interpreting engineering

Qualifications

  • Requires a high school diploma or equivalent plus: a BS degree in a technical field and 4 years relevant work experience or; a technical institute, Adult BOCES certification, AA degree in a technical field, CCI program completion at BNL plus 8 years relevant experience or; a technical high school certification program (eg. BOCES) and 9 years relevant work experience or; 10 years relevant work experience.
  • Experience assembling delicate components including a basic understanding of configuration control, quality assurance, and quality control.
  • Experience prototyping mechanical components in a machine shop.
  • Experience interpreting engineering drawings, mechanical assembly procedures, and technical documentation.
  • Experience with test stand construction with a focus on cryogenic and mechanical systems.
  • Experience installing, debugging, and operating systems with both mechanical and electronic components.
  • Basic knowledge of Windows computers and applications such as Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
  • Ability to understand and follow BNL safety principles.
  • Demonstrated ability to prioritize tasks according to production schedules.
  • A demonstrated strong work ethic and the ability to take initiative on assigned tasks and projects.
  • Ability to work collaboratively in close quarters with a small team of technicians, scientists, and students.

Responsibilities

  • Assembly of delicate components in a cleanroom environment.
  • Operation of complex laboratory equipment such as microscopes, wirebonders, computer controlled linear stages, and metrology machines.
  • Specialized mechanical and electrical support including machining high-precision components, building mechanical structures for electronics systems, building cryogenic and mechanical systems, gluing assemblies of small components, and record keeping of inventory and fabricated components.
