Job description

At Metro Safety & Fire, our field service technicians inspect, test, and perform routine repairs on fire and life safety equipment installed in commercial, multi-family, and institutional buildings across the Portland/Vancouver region.

We offer a unique, hands-on training program called the Cross-Train Track—a structured two-year, on-the-job training experience combined with independent study. Technicians in this program will learn the proper inspection and testing procedures, routine repairs, and relevant codes. The goal is to prepare trainees to pass ICC and NICET certification exams in multiple fire/life safety disciplines, including:

  • Portable fire extinguishers
  • Fixed suppression systems
  • Fire alarm systems
  • Fire sprinkler systems
This proven program develops well-rounded, knowledgeable fire/life safety professionals—technicians who not only know how to do the job, but also why it matters, and the codes they are upholding.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Clean driving record
  • Ability to pass a background check
  • Strong reading comprehension and math skills
  • Tech-savvy (we’re a digital-first company)
  • Strong customer service mindset and team-oriented attitude
  • Excellent self-management and time-management skills
  • Willingness to complete required independent-study coursework and exams (eight certifications total)
Preferred Experience for This Hiring Round:
We are currently prioritizing candidates with a minimum of 2 years’ experience in fire sprinkler inspection and testing.
NICET Level II in Water-Based Systems and Washington State Backflow Certification are highly desirable.

What We Offer:

  • Competitive pay ($25–$35/hr, DOE), with potential annual earnings of $50k–$100k+ post-training
  • Health and dental insurance
  • 401(k) with Roth option and employer match
  • Continued education and growth opportunities
  • Pride of ownership—we’re an ESOP (employee-owned) company
  • Small team culture: family-oriented, pet-friendly, and genuinely collaborative
This position is open now, and we’re ready to hire the right person immediately.
