The Pardons and Paroles, State Board of invites applications for a Criminal Investigator 3 in the Investigations Division. This sworn law enforcement role conducts field and background investigations for parole, firearm rights restoration, pardons, civil rights, and commutations.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in a related field from an accredited college or university.
  • Georgia P.O.S.T. certification and two (2) years of related experience; or Georgia P.O.S.T. certification and four (4) years of experience in law enforcement or related field; or Georgia P.O.S.T. certification and one (1) year of experience required at the lower level Criminal Investigator 2 (PSP091) or position equivalent.

Responsibilities

  • Special Investigations: Conducts prison interviews with life-sentenced inmates eligible for parole consideration.
  • Firearm Rights Restoration: Performs residential visits and lifestyle assessments of applicants.
  • Pardons & Civil Rights Restoration: Conducts comprehensive background investigations and applicant interviews.
  • Parolee Commutation Evaluations: Assesses applicant eligibility and case circumstances.
  • Standard Investigative Workflow: Intake, record, and prioritize incoming cases; review documentation and GCIC/NCIC data before interviews.
  • Interviews: Schedule and conduct in-person interviews with inmates, applicants, and references or witnesses.
  • Reporting: Prepare comprehensive written findings and submit reports within deadlines.
  • Executive Security, Public Relations & Support Security: Provide executive protection and security for Board members and staff.

Job Description

Criminal Investigator -Investigations Division The Criminal Investigator conducts specialized field and background investigations for parole, firearm rights restoration, pardons, civil rights, and commutations. The position performs sworn law enforcement duties, provides executive protection, and represents the agency across inter-agency and public initiatives.

Key Responsibilities
  • Special Investigations: Conducts prison interviews with life-sentenced inmates eligible for parole consideration.
  • Firearm Rights Restoration: Performs residential visits and lifestyle assessments of applicants.
  • Pardons & Civil Rights Restoration: Conducts comprehensive background investigations and applicant interviews.
  • Parolee Commutation Evaluations: Assesses applicant eligibility and case circumstances.
  • Standard Investigative Workflow: Intake & Review: Intake, record, and prioritize incoming cases; review all available documentation and GCIC/NCIC background data prior to interviews.
  • Interviews: Schedule and conduct efficient in-person interviews with inmates (in state prisons), applicants (at home/residence), and related references or witnesses.
  • Reporting: Prepare comprehensive written findings and submit completed reports within mandatory timeframes.
  • Law Enforcement & Field Functions Statutory Authority & Operations: Execute law enforcement duties per O.C.G.A. § 42-9-48 / 42-9-9.1, participate in warrant sweeps with DCS, transport parolees (in-state/out-of-state), and coordinate joint arrests and searches with local, state, and federal agencies.
  • Training & Certifications: Maintain annual POST certified training (20 hours), biannual firearms re-qualification (minimum score of 240), ASP Baton, Taser, and GCIC/NCIC database authorizations.
  • Instruction & Readiness: Serve as a POST/IT Trainer (if applicable) for sworn/non-sworn staff, inspect and maintain state-issued vehicles, weapons, uniforms, and tactical gear.
  • Executive Security, Public Relations & Support Security & Protection: Provide executive protection and security for Board members and agency staff during daily operations and public events.
  • Liaison & Program Representation: Act as a liaison to law enforcement and the public; represent the agency in committees, community events, Victim Services Visitors Day, and GDC Family Day.
  • Operational Availability & Administration: Maintain after-hours accessibility via mobile device for Board or emergency response; prepare required administrative forms, spreadsheets, status reports, and perform other assigned duties.
Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in a related field from an accredited college or university, Georgia P.O.S.T. certification, and two (2) years of related experience; or Georgia P.O.S.T. certification and four (4) years of experience in law enforcement or related field; or Georgia P.O.S.T. certification and one (1) year of experience required at the lower level Criminal Investigator 2 (PSP091) or position equivalent.--Note: Some positions may require the incumbent to have a valid Class C driver's license.
