R&D Maintenance Services, Inc. provides operations and maintenance services on U.S Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) projects throughout the southeast - since 1980. We are the Operations and Maintenance Contractor for the Tennessee Tombigbee Waterway providing machinery and facility maintenance and repair on several hundred miles of waterway and 9 locks/dams/spillways on the system. R&D is an EEO Employer. General Description:

Permanent, full-time position conducting floating plant crane operations reporting to the Captain - Clamming, snagging, material/personnel lifts, and equipment maintenance. Floating plant - M/V Tenn-Tom Towing Vessel (M24745X - 160 long tons) and SAM2301 crane barge - performing maintenance on the Tennessee-Tombigbee Waterway utilizing a new Liebherr HD8300 lattice-boom crawler crane. Standard work schedule is 4, 10-hour days (Monday through Thursday - overnight on vessel Mon-Wed). Occasional routine overtime and 14-30 days of 12hr. shifts during scheduled, annual lock maintenance closures.
ILLUSTRATIVE TASKS:
  • Operate the crane with clamshell to remove material from the channel, load onto barge, and unload onto shore.
  • Operate the crane to move/load equipment or material from the dock to the barge, or from the barge to the lock wall, spillway deck, etc.
  • Assist with floating plant operations and rigging when not operating or when the other operator is running the crane.
  • Perform daily safety checks to ensure equipment is in safe operating condition. Inspect, clean, and perform operator level maintenance on equipment in accordance with the manufacturer requirements and company policy.
  • Work with other floating plant crew to change out blocks, attachments, or wire rope.
  • Participate in all lift planning as required.
  • Operate mobile, hydraulic rough terrain crane (onshore or barge-mounted) when required by the project.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
  • Knowledge of the principles, methods, standard practices, rigging, and techniques required for marine crane operations on a barge.
  • NCCCO Certified and ability to properly calculate lifting capacities, deductions, and center of gravities.
  • Ability to obtain, through evaluation, the certification to operate the applicable crane model.
  • Knowledge of equipment maintenance and safe operations.
  • Ability to plan and schedule multiple tasks and effectively prioritize and plan work activities; uses time efficiently; plans for additional resources; analyze and solve problems; make decisions; exercise good judgment; perform well under pressure; adapt well to change.
  • Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.
  • Must have knowledge of manufacturer load charts, how to interpret/apply them, and mathematical ability to perform required measurements and calculations.
  • Ability to demonstrate overall safe work behavior; including the utilization of proper safety equipment and adhering to safety guidelines.
  • Ability to operate other floating plant equipment such as winches, tuggers, generators, pumps, etc.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS/REQUIREMENTS:
  • High School Diploma or formal training in mobile crane operations.
  • Must have five (5) years of experience as a crane operator. NCCCO Certified including 300ton lattice boom certification.
  • Must be able to plan and execute all crane lift operations including clamshell, snagging, and material/equipment/personnel lifts.
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license.
  • Must have knowledge of applicable crane operation load requirements and mathematical ability to perform required calculations.
  • Ability to demonstrate overall safe work behavior; including the utilization of proper safety equipment and adhering to safety guidelines.
  • Maintains various records related to work orders and assigned activities.
  • Required to successfully complete background check, MVR, and drug/alcohol screenings.
  • Overtime occasionally during regular work schedule; Significant overtime during lock closures or dam/spillway repairs (Days to weeks) - typically once annually but may be less or more.
  • Commute to different dockside locations along the waterway dependent on where the floating plant is working.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
  • Frequent walking and standing.
  • Often lifts/carries up to 20 pounds with occasional lifting up to 50 pounds; occasional pulling up to 20 pounds.
  • Occasional climbing ladders and working at heights.
  • Frequent use of power and hand tools.
  • Frequent balancing, kneeling, reaching (full range) bending, handling, feeling, climbing, smelling and twisting; occasional crawling and reaching; working in cramped and confined spaces.
