Job summary

Kinsale Insurance is seeking a Coverage Attorney in Richmond, VA to lead the full spectrum of coverage litigation, from issue analysis to claims handling alignment. You will work with outside counsel, mediate and try cases, and advise on evolving coverage trends.

The role demands J.D. and bar admission, strong writing and analytical skills, and a background in insurance defense. You’ll be part of a high-impact team focused on precise, data-driven decision making.

Qualifications

• J.D. degree and four-year college degree required.
• Active admission to practice law in at least one state.
• Superior writing skills with demonstrated ability to draft claim correspondence, coverage positions, and litigation pleadings.
• Strong analytical ability to interpret state laws, regulations, and case law related to insurance coverage and claims handling.
• Background in litigation, preferably involving insurance claims and coverage matters.
• Experience in the commercial property and casualty insurance industry, preferably in the excess and surplus lines market.
• Detail-oriented with strong interpersonal skills, organizational ability, and a collaborative mindset.

Responsibilities

• Overseeing all aspects of the coverage litigation process, including analyzing coverage issues and determining exposure across all levels of litigation.
• Evaluating claims handling and underwriting practices to identify risk and support sound coverage positions.
• Working closely with outside counsel to draft pleadings and motions consistent with Kinsale's coverage positions and proprietary policy forms.
• Reviewing and responding to subpoenas and complaints filed with state insurance departments.
• Participating in mediations, arbitrations, and trials, with travel as needed.
• Preparing comprehensive coverage position papers that account for venue and claims handling practices.
• Communicating effectively with agents, brokers, and attorneys — both orally and in writing.
• Partnering with senior management to identify best practices and advise on responses to changes in the legal environment.

About the Role

Salary Range: $100,000 – $130,000

This posted range is our best estimate; starting salary will be based on experience level. Additionally, the posted range reflects only base salary and does not include annual bonuses, benefits, or reimbursements.
