Job summary

The Maine Judicial Branch in Skowhegan is seeking certified law enforcement officers or qualified individuals with Phase 1 pre-service training to become certified Judicial Marshals. This full-time role focuses on courthouse security for judges, staff, and the public, with a clear path to certification within one year.

Starting pay ranges from $25.72 to $27.03 per hour, plus a geographical cost of living stipend.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED.
• Successful completion of the Maine Criminal Justice Academy Pre-Service Law Enforcement Training program.
• Applicants not yet through Pre-Service Training may be sponsored by the Judicial Branch on a case-by-case basis.
• Ability to interact effectively with judges/justices, court staff, attorneys, and the public.
• Be eligible for Judicial Marshal certification within one year of employment.
• Qualified with an agency-issued firearm per agency policy and CJ Academy standards.
• Ability to pass a polygraph examination and national fingerprinting.

Responsibilities

• Serves as Judicial Marshal for the court, providing security and monitoring court day activities.
• Enforces Maine law within the courthouse and effect arrests when necessary; monitors surveillance and entry screening equipment.
• Observes all persons entering the courtroom and maintains the orderly flow of paperwork between Judge, Clerk, defendants, and participants.
• Patrols courthouse public areas and maintains a visible security presence.
• Announces opening, recess, and closing of court sessions; directs people to locations and informs them of schedules.
• Ensures all parties are present and ready before the presiding judge enters.
• Maintains mandatory yearly training including CJ Academy, CPR/First Aid, firearms qualifications.
• Responds to emergencies and maintains courthouse safety.
