Job summary

Pierre, SD is the location for a full-time Corrections Lieutenant role with the South Dakota Department of Corrections. This leadership position directs shift operations, maintains security, and coordinates with medical, behavioral health, and administrative units to ensure continuity of services.

The ideal candidate will have corrections leadership experience, supervisory background, and the ability to manage complex incidents while overseeing staff and offender safety across shifts, including

Qualifications

• Three (3) years of progressively responsible corrections experience in a secure facility, including at least one (1) year of supervisory experience at Sergeant level or higher.
• Combination of relevant post-secondary education and corrections experience totaling three years for Educational Track.
• Direct corrections experience in custody, supervision, or related roles is required.

Responsibilities

• Serve as Shift Commander with full operational authority over facility safety, security, and administrative functions during shifts.
• Coordinate with medical, mental health, and program staff to ensure required treatments and offender access.
• Maintain daily logs, incident reports, and records in compliance with DOC standards.
• Schedule staff across posts to maintain staffing levels and minimize overtime.
• Conduct regular post inspections to verify staff readiness and equipment operation.
• Mentor staff and manage performance, discipline, and grievances as needed.
• Oversee incident command during emergencies and coordinate security responses.
