Job summary

The County of Thurston is seeking a Jail Officer to support inmate supervision and safety. You will handle intake, security, and daily operations in the county jail, including transport, documentation, and coordination with courts and medical staff.

Responsibilities include maintaining order, conducting searches, administering basic care, documenting incidents, and responding to emergencies. A valid WA driver’s license and background clearance are required.

Qualifications

• Must have a High School Diploma or G.E.D.
• Must be a US Citizen, lawful permanent resident, or DACA recipient with the ability to read, write, and speak English as required by RCW 41.14.100.
• Minimum age of 19 years and 6 months at time of appointment.
• Must hold or obtain valid Washington State Driver's license.
• Must meet Thurston County Civil Service Pre-Employment Screening Standards.
• Acceptable scores on Civil Service skills examinations.
• Must meet the Sheriff's Office Employment Standards and be willing to submit to and pass a thorough background investigation to include a polygraph examination and psychological evaluation.
• Must meet the current physical standards adopted by the Sheriff's Office.
• If you are claiming Veterans' Scoring Criteria status, provide DD Form 214 or NGB Form 22 with materials and a completed Veterans Scoring Criteria Declaration.

Responsibilities

• Receives, searches, books, fingerprints, and photographs incoming prisoners.
• Issues jail uniforms, records and stores personal effects, and houses inmates by classification.
• Maintains jail security by observation, pat searches, strip searches, and cell searches.
• Ensures inmates have access to basic hygiene and welfare.
• Prepares and delivers prisoners to court, doctors' offices, hospitals, and other locations.
• Transports prisoners to and from jail and court; releases prisoners per procedures.
• Logs court dispositions and writes reports; maintains files.
• Screens and processes visitors; handles inmate property.
• Monitors medical needs and administers prescribed medications.
• Responds to disturbances, medical emergencies, and other incidents; documents after-action reports.
• Prepares memos, logbook entries, and unit rosters; performs related duties.
