Job summary

Thurston County is recruiting Extra Help Juvenile Detention Officers to supervise and care for court-involved youth in a secure facility and related programs. The role includes monitoring security systems, intake procedures, visitor control, transport, and daily detainee activities.

Candidates must be 21+, have a HS diploma or GED, complete annual defensive tactics training, pass a background check, hold First Aid/CPR, and a WA driver’s license.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED.
• Must be at least 21 years of age.
• Detention employees will complete a training program in proper Use nonphysical Force every year.
• Must pass a background investigation and provide fingerprints.
• Must have First Aid and CPR certification.
• Must possess a valid Washington State driver’s license.

Responsibilities

• Operate electronic security systems and monitor restricted areas from the Master Control Room.
• Conduct intake and release procedures for juvenile detainees and complete required paperwork.
• Monitor visitors, verify signatures, and secure valuables for detainees.
• Prepare detainees for school programs and coordinate transportation when needed.
• Provide transportation to community activities and supervise detainees in daily custodial tasks.
• Distribute medications as prescribed and ensure proper instructions are followed.
• Escort detainees to court and assist during court appearances when required.
• Document incidents and assist with behavior modification as directed.
