Job summary

Gateway Foundation is seeking dedicated counselors for the Newberry site, delivering group-based, trauma-informed substance use treatment to incarcerated men at Newberry Correctional Facility. The role supports clinical independence and recovery goals within a correctional setting.

Counselors typically lead 1–2 groups of 15 clients and stay connected with a statewide network for collaboration across Michigan facilities. Strong interpersonal skills and commitment to treatment are essential.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree with minimum two years’ experience or Master’s degree with minimum one year of experience.
• Experience in substance abuse field with skills in counseling, assessment, treatment planning and group therapy; working with offender population.
• Clinical licensure and/or certification in Michigan or ability to obtain within designated timeframe preferred.

Responsibilities

• Provides group orientation, individual intake, comprehensive assessment, Mid- Program assessment and discharge planning including aftercare recommendations.
• Documents treatment and discharge plans, and client progress; maintains related records and charts.
• Provides evidence-based group therapy for up to 15 offenders per group.
• Provides individual segregation discharges as needed for offenders terminated early from services, per MDOC contract requirements.
• Completes reporting requirements.
• Adheres to MDOC policies and procedures with focus on safety and professional boundaries.
• Navigates between internal electronic health record and MDOC system for reporting.
