It is responsible for safeguarding and preserving lives and property through prevention, protection, and preparation as well as the care, custody, and supervision of all adults sentenced for violating North Carolina laws. This department includes state prisons with custody, healthcare, and facility operations staff as well as probation/parole officers who supervised sentenced people in the community. Description of Work

Reporting to the Correctional Associate Warden of Operations, this position provides supervision of subordinate officers and their assigned tasks and activities regarding the custody and welfare of male offenders in a Minimum/Medium/Close custody state correctional facility.

Job responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Conducting shift line-up, making shift assignments, and inspecting personnel to determine if they are physically and mentally capable of assuming an assigned post.
  • Completing, reviewing, and maintaining time reports, duty rosters, leave schedules, performance evaluations, and administrative forms.
  • Accounting for persons and funds to ensure that all assigned equipment is operationally ready.
  • Performing various duty assignments with the defined level of work and ensuring 24/7 staffing coverage.
  • Supervising and assigning subordinate officers to a particular area or post. Employee is responsible for subordinate officers' activities relating to the custody and welfare of offenders.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities / Management Preferences

Salary Range: $41,206 - $72,113

Additional (not required) KSAs: Knowledge of facility operations, Knowledge of Prisons’ policy and procedures.

Special Qualifications
  • MUST be eligible for certification by the North Carolina Criminal Justice Education & Training Standards Commission.
  • To be considered for a Correctional Sergeant III position, ALL applicants must: Meet Criminal Justice Standards requirements (12 NCAC 09G .0302), Pass a criminal background check, Produce a negative drug screening result, Successfully complete medical and psychological evaluations, Possess a valid driver’s license.

Note to Current State Employees: The salary grade for this position is NC09. If selected for this position, a new salary will be recalculated taking into consideration the quantity of relevant education and experience, funding availability, and internal equity. The Division of Institutions manages the daily operations of all state-operated prison facilities across North Carolina. Facilities are categorized by custody levels (minimum, medium, close) and house individuals serving sentences for felony convictions. The division provides safety, security, and rehabilitative services through trained custody staff, program facilitators, and administrative personnel.

About Scotland Correctional Institution

Scotland Correctional Institution is located in Laurinburg, North Carolina and houses up to 1,800 male offenders in a close, medium, and minimum custody facility.
