The Division of Institutions within the State of North Carolina seeks a Correctional Sergeant II at Maury Correctional Institution in Hookerton. The role supervises Correctional Officer II personnel, maintains inmate security, and enforces facility rules while coordinating shift coverage and emergency responses.

Ideal candidates must hold a High School or GED, meet CJ Standards, pass background and drug screens, and be eligible for certification.

Qualifications

  • High School or GED diploma and two years six months of experience as a Correctional Officer, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Must be eligible for certification by the N.C. Criminal Justice Education & Training Standards Commission.
  • Must meet Criminal Justice Standards requirements, pass a criminal background check, and produce a negative drug screening result.
  • Complete medical and psychological evaluations and possess a valid driver’s license.

Responsibilities

  • Assigns staff to posts and supervises Correctional Officer II personnel in close-custody facilities.
  • Ensures custody, security, and welfare of inmates; enforces rules and procedures.
  • Coordinates shift coverage, conducts drills, searches, and emergency responses.
  • Prepares and reviews reports; conducts annual performance evaluations and administers discipline as needed.

We have a mission that matters!Description of WorkThe Correctional Sergeant II position is located at Maury Correctional Institution in Hookerton, which houses approximately 1504 medium or close custody male offenders. Work in this class involves first-line supervision to Correctional Officer II's in close-custody institutions with restrictive and controlled housing.Knowledge Skills and Abilities/Management PreferencesPosition assigns lower-level custody staff to a particular area or post. Employees oversee officer activities and performance and ensure that the custody, security and welfare of inmates is maintained. Employees arrange work schedules to ensure shift coverage, implement operational procedures and ensure rules and regulations are followed according to policy. Positions report directly to a Correctional Lieutenant III and/or the Correctional Housing Unit Manager. Ensures that staff is fully trained and that proper conduct, actions and procedures are followed. Maintains facility security through regular inspections to ensure compliance with governing regulations and standards relating to facility maintenance and health and safety of inmates. Gives direction during drills, searches, and in emergencies. May lead staff in carrying out tactical assignment(s). Responds to emergency situations, searches for escaped offenders, and transports offenders. Conducts and/or supervises searches of offenders, their living quarters, and work areas for contraband. Investigates and takes action, where appropriate, regarding security issues, incidents, disputes, and complaints. Prepares and reviews a variety of reports. Completes annual performance evaluations and assists in assessing, evaluating, and implementing employee discipline. Conducts staff briefing sessions. Performs other related duties as required. Must be eligible for certification by the N.C.
