Job description

This position is assigned to Pasquotank Correctional Institution located in Elizabeth City, NC. Work in this class involves first-line supervision of Correctional Officer III's in close-custody institutions with restrictive and controlled housing. Positions assign lower-level custody staff to specific areas or posts. Employees oversee officer activities and performance, ensuring the custody, security, and welfare of inmates. Employees arrange work schedules for shift coverage, implement operational procedures, and ensure compliance with rules and regulations. Employees at this level supervise more staff than the lower-level Correctional Sergeant I or II. Positions report directly to a Correctional Lieutenant III and/or the Correctional Housing Unit Manager. They ensure staff is fully trained, and proper conduct, actions, and procedures are followed. Maintenance of facility security through inspections, direction during drills, searches, emergencies, and referrals to restrictive housing are key responsibilities. The role includes leading tactical staff, responding to emergencies, conducting searches, investigating security issues, preparing reports, evaluating staff performance, and conducting briefings. Must be eligible for certification by the N.C. Criminal Justice Education & Training Standards Commission.

As of January 1, 2025, there are new salary adjustments approved by the State Human Resources Commission, with a new salary range of $39,671 - $69,426. Prior applicants remain under consideration and do not need to reapply.

Note to Current State Employees:The salary grade for this position is NC09. State employees are encouraged to apply for positions of interest even if the salary grade is the same or lower. The new salary will be recalculated based on education, experience, funding, and internal equity, possibly resulting in a pay increase.

Management Preference: Eastern Region prefers candidates with at least 2 years as a Correctional Officer.

Qualification options include a High School diploma or GED plus three years of Correctional Officer experience, or two years as a Correctional Officer III, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Must be eligible for certification by the N.C. Criminal Justice Education and Training Standards Commission.
