Job summary

South Carolina Department of Corrections seeks a Shift Supervisor to oversee housing unit security and supervise inmates and staff assigned to the housing units. You will conduct inspections, supervise counts, and help ensure safety, security, and sanitation standards.

Under this role you will counsel and train subordinate personnel, prepare evaluations, and, when needed, perform duties of the Shift Lieutenant. Must complete eight weeks of SCDC Basic Training on hire.

Qualifications

• A high school diploma and relevant experience. A bachelor’s degree may substitute for the required experience.
• A high school diploma and eighteen (18) months experience in correctional, security, military, or police work.
• A degree in criminal justice or a related degree may substitute for 1/2 of required experience.

Responsibilities

• Oversee the supervision of subordinate security assigned to housing units and custody/control of inmates.
• Conduct routine inspections of living areas for security, safety, and sanitation standards.
• Investigate alleged misconduct by inmates and security personnel.
• Assist in conducting formal and informal counts.
• Supervise job performance, conduct, and appearance of security personnel and prepare evaluations.
• Counsel, recommend disciplinary action, and train subordinate staff to required standards.
• Prepare reports as needed or required.
• Perform duties of Shift Lieutenant when necessary.
• Must successfully complete eight (8) weeks of SCDC Basic Training upon hire.
