Job summary

Maryland Department of Public Safety and Correctional Services seeks a Correctional Maintenance Officer I – Refrigeration Mechanic to install, maintain, and repair commercial heating, cooling, and refrigeration systems within correctional facilities.

The role involves instructing incarcerated individuals, supervising tasks, and ensuring custody and security standards are upheld in a demanding environment.

Qualifications

• Education: High school diploma or equivalent acceptable to the Maryland State Board of Education as described in the Maryland Correctional Training Commission regulation.
• Experience: Two years of refrigeration mechanic experience.
• Military substitution: Two years of military correctional service in the criminal justice field may substitute for the required experience.

Responsibilities

• Maintains control and discipline among incarcerated individuals workers; conducts searches for contraband items; administers verbal or written disciplinary actions to incarcerated individuals for any violations of conduct standards.
• Enforces safety, sanitary, custody and security rules and regulations.
• Physically restrains incarcerated individuals if necessary during fights or escape attempts.
• Maintains continual count of incarcerated individuals assigned to work details supervised.
• Assigns installation maintenance or repair tasks to designated incarcerated individuals performing at various levels of proficiency in the trade.
• Train and instructs incarcerated individuals regarding methods and techniques, use of tools and equipment, and proper care of tools and equipment.
• Inspects and approves/disapproves all work performed by incarcerated individuals for adherence to quality standards.
