This position, reporting to a Correctional Programs Supervisor, is responsible for conducting initial assessments of offender needs, developing case plans, monitoring compliance and results, and revising plans as needed to meet offender needs and system objectives. The responsibilities include:

1. Assessing offender behavior and developing counseling strategies to promote progress.
2. Answering offender questions, providing information about classification and sentencing, communicating with offender families, and offering supportive counseling.
3. Organizing and overseeing rehabilitation programs for offenders.
4. Conducting investigations for work release and home leave, coordinating community resources, and planning transition (re-entry) activities before parole or release.
5. Recommending program involvement or custody level changes to classification committees.
6. Working with offenders with diverse problems, needs, and comprehension levels.
7. Working in all sections of a Medium Custody prison, which involves constant contact with offenders.
8. Serving in a custody role during specific activities.
9. Working some evenings, weekends, and holidays.

Pender Correctional Institution, located in Burgaw, NC, houses up to 768 male offenders in a medium custody setting.

Minimum education and experience requirements:

• Associate's degree in Criminal Justice, Human Services, Recreation, or related field, OR
• High school diploma/GED plus two years of custody experience in NC Department of Adult Correction, OR
• Equivalent training and experience.

Applicants must be eligible for certification by the North Carolina Criminal Justice Education and Training Standards Commission.
