Job description

Exciting Opportunity to Grow into a CFO Role!

We are partnering with a well-established, privately held real estate investment firm seeking an experienced, hands‑on Controller with the potential to advance into the Chief Financial Officer (CFO) role within the next 2–3 years.

This is an exciting opportunity for someone who enjoys working in a smaller, entrepreneurial real estate investment environment, where you can take ownership, build and improve processes, and make a meaningful impact on the business.

Our client is looking for a true hands‑on leader—not someone who simply delegates. The ideal candidate enjoys rolling up their sleeves, managing day‑to‑day accounting, mentoring a small team of three, and working closely with senior leadership.

What You’ll Be Doing
  • Lead, mentor, and manage a small accounting team of three while remaining actively involved in daily accounting operations.
  • Oversee all accounting functions, including general ledger, month‑end and year‑end closing, financial reporting, and reconciliations.
  • Prepare and review financial statements for multiple real estate entities, properties, and investment partnerships.
  • Ensure accurate financial reporting and compliance with GAAP.
Build & Improve Accounting Processes
  • Develop, implement, and improve accounting policies, procedures, workflows, and internal controls.
  • Build scalable accounting processes to support business operations and future growth.
  • Identify inefficiencies, streamline reporting, and establish best practices.
  • Take ownership of improving accounting systems and creating a more structured, efficient department.
Tax, Audit & Treasury Management
  • Oversee tax compliance, tax reporting, and coordination with outside tax advisors.
  • Manage annual audits and work directly with external auditors.
  • Oversee treasury functions, including cash management, cash flow forecasting, banking relationships, and funding requirements.
  • Manage property distributions, debt obligations, and lender reporting requirements.
  • Maintain depreciation and amortization schedules and support real estate tax planning.
  • Oversee accounting for a portfolio of commercial and multifamily real estate investments.
  • Review property financial performance, operating budgets, capital expenditures, and investment activities.
  • Support acquisitions, financing transactions, and joint venture accounting.
  • Partner directly with senior leadership on financial planning, reporting, and strategic business decisions.
What We’re Looking For
  • Strong hands‑on Controller experience within a small REIT, privately held real estate investment firm, or real estate ownership company.
  • Proven experience managing and developing a small accounting team.
  • Demonstrated success building accounting processes, policies, procedures, and internal controls.
  • Strong experience overseeing tax, audits, treasury, and financial reporting.
  • Solid understanding of commercial real estate, property accounting, and real estate investment structures.
  • Experience with multiple entities, partnerships, and joint ventures.
  • Strong Excel skills; experience with Yardi Voyager and QuickBooks.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.
  • CPA required.
  • Excellent communication, organizational, and problem‑solving skills.
Why Consider This Opportunity?

Clear Path to CFO: Opportunity to advance into the Chief Financial Officer position within 2–3 years as you demonstrate leadership, strengthen financial operations, and take on greater strategic responsibilities.

Make a Real Impact: Help shape and improve the accounting department rather than simply maintaining existing processes.

Hands‑On Leadership: Lead a small team while staying actively involved in the business.

Direct Access to Leadership: Work closely with decision‑makers and contribute to important financial and operational decisions.

Established Real Estate Portfolio: Join a financially established real estate investment business with a long history in the industry.

Ownership & Autonomy: Take responsibility for accounting operations and help drive improvements across the organization.

Equal Opportunity Employer
