Bullpen is partnering with a growing, vertically integrated real estate investment and operating firm to hire an Assistant Controller. Reporting directly to the CFO, this person will lead day-to-day accounting across a multi-entity platform while helping strengthen financial reporting, internal controls, budgeting, and cash forecasting.
This is a hands-on leadership opportunity for someone who can own the monthly close, develop junior staff, resolve complex accounting issues, and translate financial results into clear business insights. The role offers broad exposure to the finance function and an opportunity to take on increasing Controller-level responsibility as the platform grows.
What You'll Do
- Own the monthly close across corporate, related, and selected investment entities, ensuring accurate financial statements and timely reporting.
- Prepare and review journal entries, balance-sheet reconciliations, account classifications, and supporting workpapers.
- Manage intercompany accounting, including allocations, bill-backs, settlements, and due-to/due-from balances.
- Supervise and develop two junior accounting team members, reviewing their work and establishing clear responsibilities and deadlines.
- Coordinate external accounting resources and help bring additional accounting capabilities in-house.
- Oversee AP review, payment documentation, fee billing, and accounts-receivable tracking.
- Investigate unusual transactions and discrepancies, recommend solutions, and elevate technical matters to the CFO.
- Support construction draw accounting and project-related invoicing.
- Partner with the CFO on budgeting, forecasting, cash projections, and budget-to-actual analysis.
- Prepare management reporting that explains financial performance, cash movements, and material variances.
- Strengthen accounting procedures, documentation, and internal controls; identify opportunities to automate recurring work.
- Coordinate supporting schedules and information for tax, audit, lender, and investor reporting needs.
What We're Looking For
- Progressive accounting experience with meaningful ownership of monthly close and financial reporting in an operating business.
- Strong multi-entity and intercompany accounting experience.
- Hands-on proficiency with QuickBooks Online or QuickBooks Enterprise.
- Experience supervising junior staff or reviewing accounting work while remaining comfortable preparing entries and reconciliations personally.
- Strong Excel skills and the ability to connect accounting results to underlying business activity.
- Exposure to budgeting, forecasting, cash planning, or financial analysis.
- Strong judgment, attention to detail, clear communication, and consistent follow-through.
- Comfort building processes and solving problems in a growing, entrepreneurial environment.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience in real estate investment, construction, development, private equity, or a family office.
- CPA designation or progress toward a CPA.
- Familiarity with construction draws, investment entities, and management-fee accounting.
The Opportunity
Work directly with the CFO, take ownership of a broad accounting function, and help build the systems and reporting needed to support a growing real estate platform. This position offers a path toward broader Controller and FP&A responsibilities based on performance and business needs.
