Headfarmer, a PE-backed company in Phoenix, seeks a Controller to own the full accounting function as it quadruples in size and plans another scale. You will lead GL, AR, AP, and close with a five-day month-end cadence.
You’ll build a high-performing team of about ten, drive modernization with automation/AI, and prepare for an eventual senior leadership role within five years. Acquisition accounting will come later, with training provided.
Our client is a private equity-backed, multi-site organization headquartered in Phoenix with operations across the country. They’ve grown roughly 4x in the last few years, have a plan to do it again, and are adding new markets and acquisitions every quarter.
They need a Controller who wants real ownership, not a seat in a committee.
This is a true succession role. The person who lands here is expected to step into the senior accounting leadership seat within about five years. You’ll report to an executive who sets direction, trusts you with the details, and doesn’t micromanage. Competitive base salary + annual bonus + equity.
You’ll lead the full accounting operation: general ledger, payables, receivables, and the monthly and annual close, with a target of closing the books in five days. A team of about ten reports to you, including experienced senior accountants who need a strategic leader, not a babysitter. Over time, the accounting systems group moves under you too.
You’ll also shape how the function runs. Expect to modernize the tech stack (including automation and AI tools), finish rolling out new spend and lease platforms, choose a better fixed asset solution, and guide the company through an upcoming auditor transition. Acquisition accounting comes later, and you’ll be trained on it.
A strong record leading AR, AP, and GL hands-on, plus solid lease accounting experience across both finance and operating leases in a high-volume setting. You’ve managed and coached a team and built trust with operations partners outside of finance. You might be a Controller at a smaller company ready for more scale, or an Assistant Controller ready for the top job. A CPA, an industry background after public accounting, Intacct experience, and exposure to PE ownership or SOX would all help.
This is a scrappy, roll-up-your-sleeves environment, not a buttoned-up corporate one. Priorities shift often. The people who do well here make decisions quickly, stay steady when things change, and enjoy building as they go. Leadership works onsite five days a week, with flexibility when life requires it.
