Position Title: Copywriter

Time Type: Full time

Position Summary and Qualifications: The Copywriter is an integral member of the University’s brand storytelling and enrollment marketing team, focusing primarily on prospective audiences, recruitment and revenue generation. This role is responsible for conceptualizing, creating, editing and updating external-facing digital marketing and storytelling content that aligns with the University’s mission, vision, values and brand. This role reports to the Sr. Director of Brand Storytelling and works cross-functionally with colleagues in Enrollment Management, Admission, Advancement, Academic Affairs and Student Life.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

• Write creative and compelling content to ensure that priorities and key messages are articulated clearly, succinctly and consistently in print and online, including digital ads, marketing campaigns, fundraising materials, reports, brochures, signage, event invitations, webpages, video scripts, emails, social media posts and more.
• Create short, pithy, creative marketing copy that furthers brand awareness, stimulates lead generation and engages key university audiences.
• Work across storytelling, growth marketing and design teams to ensure messaging aligns with visuals and broader campaign objectives.
• Craft persuasive copy for enrollment-focused print collateral and emails, supporting student recruitment efforts and communication strategies.
• Collaborate with Sr. Directors of Brand Storytelling and Growth Marketing to develop content that drives engagement and conversions.
• Incorporate SEO and AEO best practices into all web content, working alongside web team and AEO/SEO Writer to implement keyword research that informs writing and helps improve organic search performance.
• Work with the web team and AEO/SEO Writer to adjust copy based on the performance of digital content through analytics tools and A/B testing, adjusting strategies based on data insights to enhance engagement and user experience.

Secondary Duties and Responsibilities

• Pitch creative ideas and concepts that offer a unique interpretation or editorial opinion that reflect the SJU brand and support key messages and goals.
• Support content needs for internal and external University events like Admitted Student Days and Open Houses.
• Collaborate with the University’s design team to develop campaigns for marketing and reputation building content Ensure that university brand standards are maintained.
• Produce other forms of content for publications, news, social media, advancement, alumni, and internal and executive communications.
• Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

• Required Bachelor’s degree in writing, advertising, marketing or related field.
• 3+ years experience creating marketing copy and expressing nuanced ideas in a creative and accurate manner, in house or in a creative agency.
• Experience working on multimedia, multi-channeled campaigns.
• Experience writing or editing in a variety of generational and channel-focused voices — for example, grad vs. undergrad, meta ads vs. organic social, etc.
• Experience creating compelling content for Google Ads, Meta Ads and other paid digital marketing platforms.
• Experience with social media marketing and understanding of SEO and AEO best practices.
• Diverse portfolio that includes a variety of digital and print communications pieces.
• Excellent writing, editing and proofreading skills, including use of style guides, with the demonstrated command of correct grammar, punctuation and spelling.
• Superior ability to receive and assimilate critical feedback while adhering to deadlines and production schedules.

Preferred Experience

• Preferred Experience working in Drupal CMS and Anthology/Encompass email platform.
• Experience with project management platforms like Adobe Workfront.
• Experience working in and creating content for Technolutions Slate CRM.
• Curiosity about marketing in a higher education setting.

Physical Requirements and/or Unusual Work Hours

May require long periods spent in front of a computer. Weekend and after hours work may be required.

Pay Transparancy

The estimated pay range for this position is $60,000-$66,732 . Offered salary will be commensurate with work experience and educational background.
